Raul

Raul, (right) with his new family, Lorean and John with Alfie, his new brother

Our recent adopters have adopted a number of our greyhounds and currently have Alfie, a whippet mix from South Korea who also happens to be our Walkathon mascot from a couple of years ago. Alfie has been wanting a buddy who is more his size, so this couple has been on the lookout for one. So when an Italian Greyhound mix arrived at GPI from South Korea after patiently waiting for a flight, they wasted no time bringing Alfie to meet him. Fortunately they got along great, so now Alfie has a new brother: Raul! – Mike Forrest

Rock

Rock (left) with his new family, Lloyd & Anne with new siblings, Lily and Bohdi

This adoption was by another one of our long-time volunteers. They lost one of their pack of three greyhounds earlier this year and were waiting to find the perfect match before adopting again. The dog that eventually caught their eye had been returned to us recently due to a bad case of separation anxiety and really needed to go to a home with other dogs. It seemed like a good fit all around, so introductions were made to the rest of the family and everybody got along! Rock went right to his new home and is already fitting in well with the pack. – Mike Forrest

Genie

Genie (right) with new mom, Dinah and sibling, Zulu

Sometimes it can take a little while for one of our dogs to find the right home, even when they’re able to live with cats and those dogs are in short supply. The girl from South Korea that got adopted yesterday was one of these. She was always very nervous coming out to meet new people, and you can understand why a potential adopter might look past a dog that doesn’t even want to introduce herself. But with some time and patience you can get her to come out of her shell and that’s exactly what our adopter today did. So Genie is off to her new home where she will have a cat friend and a greyhound buddy to play with! – Mike Forrest

Cooler

Cooler (right) with new mom & dad, Karin & Jason and new brother, Koka (fka Jack)

On the other hand, sometimes the dogs do such a good job of showing off their personalities that they get adopted by the first people they meet. That was the case when a couple came in with their greyhound Koka. They met several of our dogs including a few that just arrived last week. Koka helped narrow the choices down, but it was easy to see why our beautiful Irish girl Cooler went home with them! – Mike Forrest

Smeed

Smeed nka Shay with her new mom and dad, Ruth & Barry

These adopters have had greyhounds going back over 20 years, and came in today looking for a new companion. They were open to pretty much anything so we were able to introduce them to a bunch of greyhounds and mixes with a variety of personalities. But it was one of our recent arrivals from Ireland that made it clear that she was the one that would be going home with them. Even before the paperwork was done she had already installed herself on the new dog bed they bought for her from the Rootique. I have no doubt that Smeed, now known as Shay, will enjoy her new bed even more in her new home! – Mike Forrest

Tilly

Tilly (left) with her new family, Amy and John with new brother, JJ, fka John

Our adopters brought in their 5-year-old greyhound JJ looking for a second dog. If you have been to one of our meet & greet booths around the area, there’s a good chance you may have met JJ there. JJ does great at our events because he gets along with everybody, human or canine. Well today he was true to form and made nice with all the dogs we introduced. This meant the decision was left up to mom & dad. One brindle girl came out and seemed to connect with them almost immediately. She has had quite a week, first traveling all the way from Australia and now moving into her new home. I think Tilly & JJ will make a great pair! – Mike Forrest

Squid

Squid with his new family, Keith, Juliet, Isaac & Lauri

This dog came to use from Hawaii with his brother Ed. The two are adorable, playful and have entranced us with their puppy antics. This boy did so well with the family’s children – gentle and played well. They are hoping to train him as a therapy dog. Go Squid!!! -Moira Corrigan

Liz

William, Alicia, Shay & Justin with Boston Terrier, Twyla and tripod Vizla, Gamma

This dog came to us in May of this year and went through 2 homes for separation anxiety. This family have a 12 year old tripod Viszla and a 5 year old Boston Terrier – a hard home to find a match for, along with their pet rats (kept separate from the dogs) and two teenagers. But Liz prevailed and is now enjoying retirement with everyone to keep her company. – Moira Corrigan

Casper

Casper with his new mom and dad, Jeff & Anastasia

This dog had a couple looking for their first dog together. They recently moved into a townhouse and were ready to adopt. They looked at a number of dogs, but Casper stole the show and was glued to the by the time they left – just in time for Halloween!!! – Moira Corrigan

Astro

Astro, originally from Australia with his new mom & dad, Bruce & Jennifer

This couple came looking for another greyhound after their last greyhound passed in June. They have had greyhounds for years and a handsome boy Astro, from Australia, caught their eye. Astro is now enjoying retirement Stateside in their home. – Moira Corrigan

Sid

Sid with his new family, James, Sara & Cheryl

This family came looking for a dog to add to their family that includes a 7 year old girl. They were particularly interested in our smaller dogs. They spent lots of time with one of our smaller dogs and finally went home with one of the biggest boys in the kennel – Sid, one of our Irish lads. – Moira Corrigan

Star

Star’s official portrait – Sorry, no family photo

This gentleman volunteered at the kennel about 10 years ago and fell in love with greyhounds, but at the time he wasn’t in a position to adopt one. Now he’s married and living in a house with a yard, so he and his wife started volunteering at the kennel doing turnout. As we often say, turnout is a great way to meet and get to know the dogs. And in this case they y fell in love and decided to bring Star home. – Moira Corrigan

Mandy

Mandy (left) with her new parents, Sofya & Shay and her new sister, Saffron

This couple from Portland came to visit during our recent Rootique shopping day. When they found out that we had a few dogs available who had previously lived with cats they were immediately interested and quickly got their home visit done. All of the dogs we introduced them to got along with their brindle girl Saffron. But one in particular caught their eye, so they brought home Mandy. – Mike Forrest

Mischief

Mischief (right) with her new family, Wendy & Gregory and their other greyhound, Melody

The couple that came in this day has had greyhounds for the last 30 years, and decided that their current girl Melody needed a companion. Since they also have a couple of cats, their options were very limited. Melody got along with all of the dogs that we introduced her to, but one girl came out determined to let everybody know that she was ready to go home today: Mischief! – Mike Forrest

Cathy, Brutus, Roxie and Romeo, Bubu, Ivy

Cathy

Cathy, nka Chloe, right, with her new dad, Russ, & brother, Adonis

This couple was kind enough to take in one of our dogs who had a problem. And, they came to get her within an hour!! They have nursed her through her recovery. All the while, they have been working on her shyness and encouraged interaction between her and her furry brother, Adonis. We were all hoping that they would adopt her and thankfully that just happened!!! This Irish sweetheart was orginally known as Cathy and will now be known as Chloe.

Brutus

Brutus, left, nka Finley, with his new family  –  Mike, Kevin,Jess & Rob with Ginger

We have all been wondering who was going to get this Irish boy. His family arrived at the kennel with a small child in tow, and there were no issues between the two and the family decided he was the one. So Brutus, nka Finley, that big boy fawn, has found his new family!!

Roxie and Romeo

Roxie, right, and Romeo with their new parent  –  Kathleen and Steve

This couple completely fell in love with these dogs and, even though they wanted to meet and get to know them, I kind of thought it was a formality. The two dogs in question have had a tough time of things. In their last home their owner unexpectedly passed away. They were brought back to us shortly after that and we started looking for a good home for them which was not an easy task. As expected the couple decided that Roxy and Romeo were the ones for them.

Bubu

Bubu with his new family  –  Nancy’s son, Bill, and Nancy

This dog has been at the kennel for a very long time and we are all so excited that his adoption day has come. The new owner has been working with him in conjunction with our trainer for about 5 months because she wanted to understand all she could about him and be prepared. This dog is so lucky and so is the family!! The addition of Bubu will make their family whole again (they recently lost their Lurcher Donny)!

Ivy

Ivy, left, with her new family  –  Daryl, Jamie and their Whippet, Pancake

We had a family with a small Whippet, named Pancake and, while we don’t have very many dogs that fit the bill, this Irish girl was worth a try. She did very well with the dogs and people so we proceeded. The couple was not at all put off with Ivy’s age (9) and they are on their way home with special girl!!!

Cossette

Cossette with her new mom, Anne Louise

This particular dog has been waiting for her new home for quite a while. The main reason is that when she first came to us, she was all puppy and needed a lot of work on her manners. Once again, our trainer, employees and volunteers jumped right in and started working with her. At this time she is a totally different dog!!! To say that she is a beautiful dog, is really an understatement — she is mainly blue with white markings. Recently, a lady contacted me and said she wanted a very active dog and she was used to that kind of behavior because of the dog she just had. I told her this dog was almost exactly like the one she described and she decided she wanted to come meet her. I don’t know that it was love at first sight, but it was pretty obvious that they quickly made a connection and the odds were good that they were going to be best buddies. We are so happy that the lady saw the things we did and are thrilled that Cosette officially has a new mom!!

Misty

Misty with her new parents, Mary Ellen & Mitch

A couple from Oregon, who have had numerous Greyhounds, were ready for their next one. They actually fell completely in love with a dog from the website and were hoping they would be able to adopt him. Unfortunately, the couple and the dog were unable to make a connection so we needed to go to plan “b”. They had some ideas about dogs they wanted to meet so we got started. Truly, we didn’t really get past the first candidate. They knew right away that they wanted our beautiful white & brown, Australian girl — Misty.

Tornado

Tornado, nka Finley (a great Irish choice), with his new family  – Devin, Brittany & Evie

This family has a 2 year old daughter so it was imperative that we find the “right” dog. When they first came to us, their timing was a little more stretched out than we usually encounter, because they have some trips planned. We told them that we had 2 dogs we thought might work for them and that if they were interested, they needed to move quickly. Luckily for them, they took us seriously and now they have our gorgeous, Irish boy, Tornado, nka Finley.

Red

Red with his new family  – Audrey & Skylar

Doing turnout could have a big impact on your dog ownership!! This couple started doing turnout recently and they did exactly what we hope will happen -they fell in love with one of our residents. They bonded quickly and it wasn’t long after the couple left turnout that I got an email wanting to adopt. We got everything pulled together and now our big red Australian hound, Red, is getting settled in his new home!

Gaz

Gaz with his new parents  – Art & Marilyn

This couple that has also had numerous Greyhounds. They lost their last one a few months ago and have actually wanted to come meet the dogs, but a few things came up and they needed to wait. The time had come for them to find their new family member. There was one criteria that was basically non-negotiable the dog had to be kid-safe. They have 14 grandchildren and one of them comes one day a week for daycare. After some deliberation, they decided on, Gaz, a gentle, sweet Irish boy.

Presh

Presh (left) with her new family .. Jordan and Chelsea, Little Boots (fka Hazel) and Scout

We have had quite a rash of people who have chosen their dog before they come to the kennel. And these people have actually had a connection with that dog. This couple did just this. They lost their last greyhound last week and they knew that they had to fill that hole pretty quickly because the whole family, including the dogs, was mourning for her. They came in asking for a specific dog and then also added that they were very open to shy dogs. We showed the dogs we had but there really was no point. They had already decided that our sweet, black Irish girl, Presh, was their new family member.

Ricky

Ricky with his new dad, Ben

This man saw the dog’s picture on Petfinder. The dog seemed to be just what he wanted. Even though he came in to see a particular dog, he wisely decided to meet some others while he was there. He enjoyed meeting the other dogs, but it came down to the special connection he had with Ricky, our black & white boy from Ireland.

Elsa, Blade, Sarah, Speedy, Destiny, Galo, Sissy, Boss

Elsa and Blade

Elsa (left) & Blade with their new parents … Jason & Francisco

The men that came today were looking for a dog that gets along with cats. That definitely narrowed down the field of dogs that were available to them. We showed them both of the cat friendly dogs we had and, it wasn’t very long after we brought out the second one that the men threw us a bit of a curve. One of the them said that they wanted to see how the dog did outside with the first dog we showed. Things went beautifully with the dogs, men etc. inside and outside! Soooo … they decided that they were going to take home both black beauties from Ireland, Elsa & Blade!!!

Sarah

Sarah with her new dad, Tyler

This man truly worked hard for this adoption!! He met his family-member-to-be a few months ago but he had a cat at that time and this particular dog was definitely not cat friendly. When his cat passed last spring, he realized he could pursue adopting the dog. He also knew that she definitely needed work on her manners and a few other things so he asked our trainer if he could schedule time to learn how to train her. They got together and then he has been coming to the kennel to train the dog every week for a few months. His dedication along with our trainer’s paid off, and he took home a dog that was much different than the one he originally met (she even sat to say hello when he came into the kennel – THAT IS BIG!!)! The two had clearly bonded and Sarah was obviously ecstatic as she left the building with her new dad.

Speedy

Speedy (nka Cleo) with her new family … Nic, Steph, Corvo & Meeka (fka Mable)

This couple came to us last fall and adopted one of our little cuties from Hawaii, Mable who is now known as Meeka. They (more specifically, the wife) recently thought that they were ready for an addition, (actually, according to the husband, she would adopt a ton of dogs if he would go for it. Hopefully, that means they’ll be back for more at some point!!). But, back to the current adoption — the fact that they have two small dogs has made it a little tough to find a Greyhound that would work for their situation. However, by doing turnout and researching the dogs, the wife identified a sweet girl from Ireland that reportedly did well with small dogs in her previous place so we made plans to introduce all the dogs. Thankfully, they all got along just fine and Miss Speedy (nka Cleo) has found her new family!!

Destiny

Destiny, nka Suki, with her new family … Catherine, Charlize & Anthony

This family was lucky enough to meet two well-behaved, Greyhound girls that were owned by the people who did their home visit. They thought those dogs were greyt and came in wanting a calm girl like one of those. Of course, we had to explain that those dogs are calm now, but when they first went home, they were a handful and it’s because of the training the people have done that the dogs have become what they are. We did have a couple of relatively, calmer girls for them to meet and we were all happy when they decided that the one for them was a sweet, black & white girl who has been with us for quite a while. None of us could understand why Destiny, nka Suki, was still here but it must have been because she was waiting for “her” family and, thankfully, they finally showed up!! –

Galo

Galo with his new family … Gerald, Nathaniel & Gayle

I know I have mentioned before that when someone comes in wanting a particular dog, it is pretty unusual for them to go home with that dog. This was one of those unusual cases — these people knew exactly who they wanted and they knew they were going to have to work a little to make this match work. The dog they wanted was a little shy and hesitant to trust people quickly, but with a little patience, he had already bonded with one family member and was well on the way to bonding with the others before he left. This little guy from Kauai with a huge name, Galactica (nka Galo for short), seemed to find just the right family for himself!!

Sissy

Sissy with her new mom, Trish

This lady has been interested in a particular dog for a month or two, but had some trips planned so she was not able to adopt her at that time. On her way home from her last trip earlier this week, she found out that this dog was featured on one of the websites and that prompted her to kick everything in to gear so she could adopt her before someone else did. She got her application and home visit done ASAP and by this afternoon, she was ready to adopt. It was very cute to watch her with the dog and see how quickly they clicked and, by the time, she took Miss Sissy (our cute little brindle Lurcher) home, the lady said that she was already completely bonded to her — that’s not hard to believe!!

Boss

Boss with his new parents, Victoria & Marc

This Canadian couple has been planning to adopt a Greyhound for quite a while and things have finally lined up in their lives so that it is possible. So, they did their research, had a training session with one of our trainers and then headed south to meet their new family member. They met a few of our dogs and narrowed the list to one boy and one girl. Our little girl was just not comfortable with any part of the process (don’t worry, now we know what to work on with her), but our handsome black & white boy from Ireland knew exactly what to do! He had both of the people wrapped around his finger quite quickly so it was no wonder that they chose Boss as their new addition!
