adoptions

Palma, Mallory, Poppy, Polk, Hope, Elmo, Anthony

July 12, 2021

Palma

Palma with her new family … Cynthia, Heather & Henry

A lady with a black lab mix named Henry and a cat was looking for a little girl that would fit in her home. Of course, when there is a cat involved, there is not a long list of dogs to choose from. But, that didn’t matter at all, they fell in love with our sweet little brindle girl named Palma so Henry officially has a new furry sister.

Mallory

Mallory (left) with her new family … Lauren, Jack & Elsie (fka Ivy)

Next, a couple came with the intention of getting one of our Whippets. They thought that the Whippets were greyt, but their current Greyhound, Elsie (fka Ivy) made it clear that she was NOT a fan. So, we started showing them the purebred dogs. There were three dogs that Elsie got along with and they were very interested in those three dogs who had very different personalities. There was a lot of discussion before they made their decision to adopt Miss Mallory!!

Poppy and Polk

Poppy (left) and Polk (nka Polka) with their new parents Paul & Jill

Our next adoptions were to a couple who also came with the intention of getting 2 dogs a few weeks ago. They have waited patiently for their dogs to be spayed and recover and they finally received the okay to go home. The two girls they selected are sisters — Polk (nka Polka) and Poppy — and they are sisters to Palma. It’s been family day at the adoption center! (Polk here)

Hope

Hope (right), nka Rosie, with her new family … Christa & Ripley

Next, the woman who adopted Ripley had noticed that he was much happier when he was around her partner’s two dogs. So she decided she needed to get him a buddy. Oh, BTW, she also needed a dog that would get along with her cat so, of course, that severely limited the choices. But, we had two little shy girls that we thought could be trained to like cats. The first one had no interest in even moving away from the door, but the second one started out that way and then as she gained a little confidence she was able to interact with the other dogs and we were even able to let them all off-leash. She really impressed her mother-to-be and Hope, nka Rosie, now has her new home!

Elmo

Elmo, nka Bowie, with his new family … Amanda, Jesse & Noah

This family came to find their new family member a couple of weeks ago but because of waiting for vet appointments and a previously planned trip, they couldn’t take the dog at that time, but the time had finally come. The dog that they picked gave them absolutely no choice in the matter — he came out and hugged them, cuddled, schmoozed & showed off. How on earth could they not make our sweet Lurcher Elmo, nka Bowie, part of their family?!

Anthony

Anthony (right) with his new family … Matt, Katie & Mabel

Then a couple brought their Dachshund, Mabel, in to find a new friend because she had recently lost her Greyhound and even though she had a kitty friend, she was lonely. We only had a couple of dogs that got along with cats and they were pretty much complete opposites and even though both dogs had lots of love to offer, it took them very little time to realize that one of our cute little Whippets from Asia was going to be theirs. This little guy was a real charmer … affectionate, outgoing, happy, smart … the list goes on and on! We know Anthony is going to be spoiled rotten just as he deserves!!!!

Mega, Rock

April 29, 2021

Mega

Mega with part of his new family — Kevin and Jude

This is a greyt example of how the publicity we do can work. Last week, one of pictures from the Bright Water walk was on Facebook. A family that already has a couple of our dogs saw the dog and fell in love with this guy. They debated about whether they should come meet him because they knew that if they did, they would adopt him (and they already have 3 Greyhounds). It went just the way they thought it would — they met Mega and made the decision to adopt him right away!!!

Rock

Rock with his new parents, Jason & Amelie

This couple recently lost their wonderful Greyhound boy and they have been missing that Greyhound presence in their home. They still have lots of love to give and they were ready to give it to another Grey. So, they came to the kennel with a list of wonderful dogs they would like to see and they had a wonderful time oooing and aahing over each dog. But they knew they could only take one and even though it was difficult to rule out the others, they decided on our very handsome, red brindle boy with the wonderful helicopter tail — Rock!!!

Griffin, Riser, Leia, Nine

March 30, 2021

Griffin

Griffin, left, with his new family … William, Chandra, Josh & Winston

The next family needed a new friend for their 7 year old Grey, Winston. Winston met a few of our dogs and he actually narrowed the list of dogs down which really helped his owners! When he got a chance to play with the dogs outside, he had fun with a couple of them, but he had the most fun with one brindle boy and the family decided that Griffin would be the best addition to their family!!!

Riser

Riser (right) with his new family … Amy, Cole & Phoebe

This couple had come looking for a dog for the same reason we have seen so often lately — they had recently lost a dog and the remaining one, Phoebe, was in need of a fur buddy. They came with a list of dogs to meet and we noticed pretty quickly that they had asked to see our young, peppy dogs. Thankfully, they weren’t “faint of heart” — they were ready for pretty much everything that goes with adopting a young, strong boy. They narrowed the list to two dogs and then had a devil of a time picking one, but they ultimately decided their hearts belonged to Riser!!

Leia

Leia with her new parents Carter & Tom

When people come to the kennel to find a new addition to their family, they often come with a very clear idea of what characteristics they hope to find in their new dog. And, it is not unusual for them to go home with a completely different dog than they were expecting. This couple did just that. We showed them quite a few dogs and I think they knew when they met their future dog, but it took a while for them to realize she was exactly what they needed. Thankfully, they decided that Miss Leia from South Korea was the perfect fit for them and before they left, she had already made it pretty clear she was going to be Daddy’s little girl!!

Nine

Nine with his new parents Dan & Rebecca

Sometimes people are overwhelmed by the idea of taking home a dog, if they haven’t had one for a while, and they have to take some time to get themselves mentally and emotionally ready to have a new addition. This couple knew which dog they wanted and had no doubts that he was the right dog, they just had to get used to the idea of what it would be like to have a big dog (even though their previous dogs were labs) and as soon as they cleared that hurdle, they knew they couldn’t wait to finalize their adoption of Nine!!

Ford, Tula, Dawson

January 25, 2021

Ford

Ford (left), nka Wallace (Wally), and his new family … Tara, Paul & Obie

GPI has an unbelievable group of people that support it and whenever we are in need of something, all we need to do is put it out to our supporters and they come through for us. In this particular situation, we had a dog that was losing his eyesight and needed a family that had another dog and was willing to help and support him through the years to come. We were so fortunate that a family stepped forward and they had everything he needed and that we wanted for him. He clicked almost instantly with his parents and his brother to be, Obie. It was especially evident when he started to follow Obie around as soon as they were off leash out in the yard. He has been in a foster-to-adopt situation for a while so we could all make sure that was the best place for him. Thankfully, it is and Ford, nka Wallace/Wally, officially has his new home and we are all so thrilled for him!!!

Tula

Tula with her new family … Kathy, Sheryl, Mike, Chad & Eric

Next a family came looking for a companion for their mother and we knew almost immediately that we had the perfect dog for her. This dog had just come back because she just didn’t fit in where she was. She was in need of a place where she could be the special dog and didn’t have to share attention with anyone else. Well, she found it!! This family fell for her immediately and she is the center of their universe. Hooray for Tula!!

TJ, Vanilla, Derringer

January 19, 2021

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

These adoptions both have something in common. They both had to return dogs and then ended up adopting other dogs that had been returned because the home they were in wasn’t working for one reason or another.

TJ

TJ, nka Elliot, with his new parents Chris and Elizabeth

The first couple needed a dog that would do well in an apartment in a busy part of Bellevue. We actually would not have thought this particular dog would do okay in an apartment because he was so active at the kennel so we wouldn’t have showed him to these people. However, because the first owner told us how quiet and easy he was, we introduced him to this couple and they hit it off right away. So, it was no surprise that TJ went home with them and is doing very well!!

Vanilla and Derringer

Vanilla (nka Nilla)
Derringer (nka Jake)

The next family wanted to eventually get two dogs who would do well with all 3 generations that live in the home. Since there is almost always someone home & they have a wide variety of ages and activity levels in the home, it seemed to all of us that their home would be a greyt place for some dogs that had separation anxiety. Luckily, it worked out and Derringer (nka Jake) and Vanilla (nka Nilla) are having lots of fun with each other and their new family! (No family photo)
