Cooper, Elsie, Jane, Aladdin, Sven, Babes

Join us here as our Adoption Representatives share stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Cooper

Cooper (right) with his new family, Kim, Thomas & John with new sibling Candy

These adopters include one of our kennel employees, and they have had several of our dogs. They have a shy greyhound named Candy so they were looking for another dog that could get along with that sort of personality. The one that they chose (or that chose them) is also on the shy side and gets along great with the rest of the family. So today they made it official and adopted our Irish boy Cooper! – Mike Forrest

Elsie

Elsie with new mom, Angie and friend, Edie

The next adopter has two cats and a 10-year-old terrier named Edie, so our options for a greyhound match were pretty limited. The first boy we introduced was a little too much for Edie to handle so he took himself out of the running. Fortunately our other cat-trainable greyhound did a much better job of introducing herself. She greeted Edie politely and pretty quickly turned her focus onto her new mom. She must have made a good impression because Elsie and company were soon loaded up and on their way to her new home! – Mike Forrest

Jane

Jane (right) with her new family, Phil and Allison with her new brother, Rod

These adopters have had several greyhounds, and came in to find a new friend for their white & brindle boy Rod. His previous buddy was a girl from Australia who sadly passed a few months back. We just happen to have a couple of Australian girls of our own, and Rod got along with both of them. So it was up to the couple to decide who to bring home. They picked the one that gives great hugs, whether you’re ready for them or not: Jane! – Mike Forrest

Aladdin

Aladdin nka Sam with his new family, Katie & Brad

Anyone who has been to the kennel knows our miracle boy Aladdin. He has survived traps, malnutrition, heartworm treatments, a multitude of medical treatments and surgeries, including removal of a lung lobe, paw treatments, a leg amputation, and bloat surgery. Aladdin has handled all of these with such grace, gentleness and sweetness. He now has his forever home!! Go Aladdin!! (nka Sam) We couldn’t be happier for you! – Moira Corrigan

Sven

Sven (left) with his new family, Carla & Bill with Skubi, fka Scooby

These adopters lost their Italian Greyhound girl in November and were looking for a new small companion for their 5 year old greyhound Skubi. It’s very rare for us to get any IGs in, but we do have a few whippet mixes. The one they came to meet arrived at GPI from Hawaii back in May and has been waiting for his people ever since. But he doesn’t help his own cause because his usual reaction to meeting new people is to bark loudly at them. He did a great job today though, immediately making friends with Skubi and politely introducing himself to the rest of the family. And then after spending some time getting to know each other, Sven & company headed off to his new home! – Mike Forrest

Babes

Babes with her new mom and dad, Donna & Jeff

A couple came in from eastern Washington looking for a greyhound to add to their family, and we were happy to oblige. They have had a greyhound before, a boy named Orzo, who passed away last year. They got to meet several of our dogs who all did a great job of showing off their personalities, but they ended up going home with the one that originally caught their eye on our web site: Babes! – Mike Forrest

Blake, Alison, Tuck

Blake

Blake with his new family, Antonio & James

The people who came in this day have had a few greyhounds before and wanted to meet some of our younger, more active dogs. We were happy to introduce a bunch of them, since our more energetic dogs sometimes get overlooked in favor of the calmer ones. All of the dogs that came out did a great job of introducing themselves and showing off their personalities. But one Irish boy had that right mix of playful and affectionate that really sealed the deal. So Blake is off to his new home in Tacoma! – Mike Forrest

Alison

Alison (family photo not available)

These folks have been a greyhound family for many years and adopted several dogs from GPI. They lost their last two greyhounds in recent months and the house was empty without a greyhound, so the search was on for another greyhound to fill their hearts and home. And with that, Alison (who came from Australia) made her way to her new home in Alaska! – Moira Corrigan

Tuck

Tuck with his new family, Chris & Sapphire

Our first adopters of 2023 are new to the area and recently lost their greyhound Bella. They started volunteering with us doing turnout, which is a wonderful way to get to know the dogs in our care. They decided who they wanted to adopt but couldn’t until after the holidays. So after what I’m sure was an excruciating wait, today they were ready to bring home our senior lurcher Tuck who I know will be spoiled rotten in his new home! – Mike Forrest

Bolt & Sophie: January Dogs of the Month

December 31, 2022

Please contact Moira Corrigan ([email protected]) for more information about BOLT.

Bolt
Tag No: 6940
Registered Name: None
Breed: Greyhound/Shepherd
Date of Birth:  October 15, 2020
Color: Brown
Cat Trainable: Unknown
Dog Friendly: See Comments
Kid Friendly: Unlikely
Location: Woodinville, WA (Kennel)
Comments:  Sophie and Bolt are siblings and came to us after being rescued from a South Korean dog meat farm.  Sophie and Bolt are so fun together and just love to run and play.  Sophie is super shy, while Bolt is more outgoing after his initial shyness.  With time and patience she is now letting a few people handle her and she loves belly rubs.  We would love to place Sophie and Bolt together in a home.  Neither of them are suitable for an apartment/condo/townhome.  Bolt needs a securely fenced yard with room to run and play and burn off his energy.  While not as shy as Sophie, Bolt needs a home that will have the patience to work with him and guide him.  That home will be rewarded 10 fold for their patience and guidance.  A DNA test on Sophie and Bolt's sister showed her as 57% greyhound, 31% german shepherd, and then various mixes of Laika.

Raul, Rock, Genie, Cooler, Smeed, Tilly

Raul

Raul, (right) with his new family, Lorean and John with Alfie, his new brother

Our recent adopters have adopted a number of our greyhounds and currently have Alfie, a whippet mix from South Korea who also happens to be our Walkathon mascot from a couple of years ago. Alfie has been wanting a buddy who is more his size, so this couple has been on the lookout for one. So when an Italian Greyhound mix arrived at GPI from South Korea after patiently waiting for a flight, they wasted no time bringing Alfie to meet him. Fortunately they got along great, so now Alfie has a new brother: Raul! – Mike Forrest

Rock

Rock (left) with his new family, Lloyd & Anne with new siblings, Lily and Bohdi

This adoption was by another one of our long-time volunteers. They lost one of their pack of three greyhounds earlier this year and were waiting to find the perfect match before adopting again. The dog that eventually caught their eye had been returned to us recently due to a bad case of separation anxiety and really needed to go to a home with other dogs. It seemed like a good fit all around, so introductions were made to the rest of the family and everybody got along! Rock went right to his new home and is already fitting in well with the pack. – Mike Forrest

Genie

Genie (right) with new mom, Dinah and sibling, Zulu

Sometimes it can take a little while for one of our dogs to find the right home, even when they’re able to live with cats and those dogs are in short supply. The girl from South Korea that got adopted yesterday was one of these. She was always very nervous coming out to meet new people, and you can understand why a potential adopter might look past a dog that doesn’t even want to introduce herself. But with some time and patience you can get her to come out of her shell and that’s exactly what our adopter today did. So Genie is off to her new home where she will have a cat friend and a greyhound buddy to play with! – Mike Forrest

Cooler

Cooler (right) with new mom & dad, Karin & Jason and new brother, Koka (fka Jack)

On the other hand, sometimes the dogs do such a good job of showing off their personalities that they get adopted by the first people they meet. That was the case when a couple came in with their greyhound Koka. They met several of our dogs including a few that just arrived last week. Koka helped narrow the choices down, but it was easy to see why our beautiful Irish girl Cooler went home with them! – Mike Forrest

Smeed

Smeed nka Shay with her new mom and dad, Ruth & Barry

These adopters have had greyhounds going back over 20 years, and came in today looking for a new companion. They were open to pretty much anything so we were able to introduce them to a bunch of greyhounds and mixes with a variety of personalities. But it was one of our recent arrivals from Ireland that made it clear that she was the one that would be going home with them. Even before the paperwork was done she had already installed herself on the new dog bed they bought for her from the Rootique. I have no doubt that Smeed, now known as Shay, will enjoy her new bed even more in her new home! – Mike Forrest

Tilly

Tilly (left) with her new family, Amy and John with new brother, JJ, fka John

Our adopters brought in their 5-year-old greyhound JJ looking for a second dog. If you have been to one of our meet & greet booths around the area, there’s a good chance you may have met JJ there. JJ does great at our events because he gets along with everybody, human or canine. Well today he was true to form and made nice with all the dogs we introduced. This meant the decision was left up to mom & dad. One brindle girl came out and seemed to connect with them almost immediately. She has had quite a week, first traveling all the way from Australia and now moving into her new home. I think Tilly & JJ will make a great pair! – Mike Forrest

Squid, Liz, Casper, Astro, Sid, Star, Mandy, Mischief

Squid

Squid with his new family, Keith, Juliet, Isaac & Lauri

This dog came to use from Hawaii with his brother Ed. The two are adorable, playful and have entranced us with their puppy antics. This boy did so well with the family’s children – gentle and played well. They are hoping to train him as a therapy dog. Go Squid!!! -Moira Corrigan

Liz

William, Alicia, Shay & Justin with Boston Terrier, Twyla and tripod Vizla, Gamma

This dog came to us in May of this year and went through 2 homes for separation anxiety. This family have a 12 year old tripod Viszla and a 5 year old Boston Terrier – a hard home to find a match for, along with their pet rats (kept separate from the dogs) and two teenagers. But Liz prevailed and is now enjoying retirement with everyone to keep her company. – Moira Corrigan

Casper

Casper with his new mom and dad, Jeff & Anastasia

This dog had a couple looking for their first dog together. They recently moved into a townhouse and were ready to adopt. They looked at a number of dogs, but Casper stole the show and was glued to the by the time they left – just in time for Halloween!!! – Moira Corrigan

Astro

Astro, originally from Australia with his new mom & dad, Bruce & Jennifer

This couple came looking for another greyhound after their last greyhound passed in June. They have had greyhounds for years and a handsome boy Astro, from Australia, caught their eye. Astro is now enjoying retirement Stateside in their home. – Moira Corrigan

Sid

Sid with his new family, James, Sara & Cheryl

This family came looking for a dog to add to their family that includes a 7 year old girl. They were particularly interested in our smaller dogs. They spent lots of time with one of our smaller dogs and finally went home with one of the biggest boys in the kennel – Sid, one of our Irish lads. – Moira Corrigan

Star

Star’s official portrait – Sorry, no family photo

This gentleman volunteered at the kennel about 10 years ago and fell in love with greyhounds, but at the time he wasn’t in a position to adopt one. Now he’s married and living in a house with a yard, so he and his wife started volunteering at the kennel doing turnout. As we often say, turnout is a great way to meet and get to know the dogs. And in this case they y fell in love and decided to bring Star home. – Moira Corrigan

Mandy

Mandy (left) with her new parents, Sofya & Shay and her new sister, Saffron

This couple from Portland came to visit during our recent Rootique shopping day. When they found out that we had a few dogs available who had previously lived with cats they were immediately interested and quickly got their home visit done. All of the dogs we introduced them to got along with their brindle girl Saffron. But one in particular caught their eye, so they brought home Mandy. – Mike Forrest

Mischief

Mischief (right) with her new family, Wendy & Gregory and their other greyhound, Melody

The couple that came in this day has had greyhounds for the last 30 years, and decided that their current girl Melody needed a companion. Since they also have a couple of cats, their options were very limited. Melody got along with all of the dogs that we introduced her to, but one girl came out determined to let everybody know that she was ready to go home today: Mischief! – Mike Forrest
