Cathy Munro

Maggie, Benni, Dancer, Goldie, Donna, Brittany

February 8, 2021

Maggie

Maggie with her new parents Sabine & Lance

This couple came to get their first Greyhound together. The husband has already had two Greyhounds and he could not wait to get another one and, apparently, he was able to convince his wife that was a wonderful idea. He and his wife have had a wide variety of dogs and they thought that a male Greyhound would be a perfect addition to their family. I’m sure you know where this is going … of course, they ended taking home a sweet little brindle girl named Maggie!!!

Benni

Benni with her new mom & dad, Matthew & Amanda

There is not much mystery about this adoption — this couple saw their future dog on one of the websites, fell in love at first sight, had a home visit and came to meet their dog. They were so sure that they were going to adopt this dog that they were putting messages on Instagram about the dog they were adopting before they even met her. Luckily, this little charmer from South Korea lived up to everything they were hoping and Benni

Dancer

Dancer (nka Gilly) with her new parents Kirby and KyRae

The first couple was from Eastern Washington and they were looking to adopt their first dog together. They didn’t need to see many dogs before they knew which one was theirs. When they met this particular dog, they both connected with her immediately and said she was their top choice. But the real signs that dog was going to be theirs were that the wife choked up when the dog came out to play with them in the yard and the deal was really sealed when the lady started to tear up while they played!! I don’t think we could have talked them out of adopting this dog if we tried and, of course, we wouldn’t have tried because Dancer (nka Gilly) obviously felt she was part of their family at once!!!

Goldie

Goldie (right) with her new family … Jacob, Jessica & Roman

Next was a couple who recently moved up here from Oregon and they were looking for a buddy for their 9 year old Grey named Roman. Roman was really easy — he got along with everyone — so the couple had to make the decision about which dog would be theirs. It wasn’t an easy decision but they decided on our sweet little fawn girl “who has been a bridesmaid many times and never the bride”, Goldie!!

Donna

Donna, nka Daphne, with her new family … Joon & Mabel, fka Megan

This man had a Greyhound and had been looking for a companion for himself & Mabel (fka Megan). He did turnout as soon as we got the new load and prescreened the dogs and came up with a couple of dogs he really hoped his dog would get along with. He did a great job because she got along with both. Then he was having to make the choice and was having a hard time deciding which dog would work best so, since we knew either dog would work with Mabel, we suggested he spend time with each of them without Mabel. One dog spent the whole time trying to get back in the building and the other couldn’t get enough attention from him. Guess which one he chose — Donna who is now known as Daphne!!!

Brittany

Brittany with her new parents Kimiko & Pierre-Ives

This next couple was finally in a place where they could add a Greyhound to their family. Actually, the wife had been wanting a Greyhound for 20 years (even though she didn’t even look nearly old enough to have wanted a dog for that long) and was very excited to finally be able to adopt. They looked at quite a variety of dogs and were able to narrow it down to two dogs — one male and one female. They were having difficulty deciding and we pointed out that they needed to stop thinking from their heads and, instead, listen to their feelings. When we asked which one they felt the strongest connection to, they both said the same name simultaneously without even thinking!! So the question was answered and decision made in one instant and Brittany was headed to her new home!!

264 Adoptions in 2020

February 8, 2021

Happy New Year!

We hope that 2021 is good to you and yours and that everyone is staying safe and well.

2020 was a good year for GPI and the Dogs!

We brought in 194 dogs last year!!  145 of those were NGA retired racers.  Then there were 2 lurchers, 4 from the UAE, 10 from South Korea, and 2 from other sources.  As a comparison, we brought in 180 dogs in 2019, 208 dogs in 2018 and 134 in 2017.

We also did 264 adoptions in 2020!!!  WOW!!  This is the highest number of adoptions in over 15 years.  As a comparison, we did 215 adoptions in 2019, 210 in 2018 and 188 adoptions in 2017.

All of this due to you – our donors, volunteers, kennel techs, adopters and supporters!!!   Thank you!!!!

As  most of you know, racing in Florida concluded on December 31, 2020.  We brought in what is likely to be our last load of NGA retired racers in January.  We continue to work with our NGA sources, but it is likely that we will not receive dogs from the other remaining tracks since we are so far from them and there is an insufficient number of dogs to justify a haul.  We continue to work with our other sources and as soon as flights resume and border restrictions are lifted we should be able to resume bringing in dogs from those sources.

Thank you for all you do for the dogs and GPI!!!

Please contact Moira Corrigan ([email protected]) for more information about BuBu.

Bubu
Tag No: 6361
Registered Name: Lucky Bu
Breed: Greyhound
Date of Birth:  June 22, 2013
Color: Black
Cat Trainable: No
Dog-Friendly: Needs to be an only dog
Kid-Friendly: No
Location: Woodinville, WA (Kennel)
Comments:  BuBu loves people.  He is playful, affectionate and sweet.  He is happiest when he can be adored by his fans.  Bubu came to us from Macau, China and did not have a good early life.  BuBu has lived in a couple of homes, but he needs to be the only dog in his home.  He walks beautifully on leash and loves to go for walks.  He is a good car rider.  BuBu's adoption includes six training sessions with Crawford Canine Academy.  BuBu would do best in a home with a securely fenced yard and no children.

Ford, Tula, Dawson

January 25, 2021

Ford

Ford (left), nka Wallace (Wally), and his new family … Tara, Paul & Obie

GPI has an unbelievable group of people that support it and whenever we are in need of something, all we need to do is put it out to our supporters and they come through for us. In this particular situation, we had a dog that was losing his eyesight and needed a family that had another dog and was willing to help and support him through the years to come. We were so fortunate that a family stepped forward and they had everything he needed and that we wanted for him. He clicked almost instantly with his parents and his brother to be, Obie. It was especially evident when he started to follow Obie around as soon as they were off leash out in the yard. He has been in a foster-to-adopt situation for a while so we could all make sure that was the best place for him. Thankfully, it is and Ford, nka Wallace/Wally, officially has his new home and we are all so thrilled for him!!!

Tula

Tula with her new family … Kathy, Sheryl, Mike, Chad & Eric

Next a family came looking for a companion for their mother and we knew almost immediately that we had the perfect dog for her. This dog had just come back because she just didn’t fit in where she was. She was in need of a place where she could be the special dog and didn’t have to share attention with anyone else. Well, she found it!! This family fell for her immediately and she is the center of their universe. Hooray for Tula!!

TJ, Vanilla, Derringer

January 19, 2021

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

These adoptions both have something in common. They both had to return dogs and then ended up adopting other dogs that had been returned because the home they were in wasn’t working for one reason or another.

TJ

TJ, nka Elliot, with his new parents Chris and Elizabeth

The first couple needed a dog that would do well in an apartment in a busy part of Bellevue. We actually would not have thought this particular dog would do okay in an apartment because he was so active at the kennel so we wouldn’t have showed him to these people. However, because the first owner told us how quiet and easy he was, we introduced him to this couple and they hit it off right away. So, it was no surprise that TJ went home with them and is doing very well!!

Vanilla and Derringer

Vanilla (nka Nilla)
Derringer (nka Jake)

The next family wanted to eventually get two dogs who would do well with all 3 generations that live in the home. Since there is almost always someone home & they have a wide variety of ages and activity levels in the home, it seemed to all of us that their home would be a greyt place for some dogs that had separation anxiety. Luckily, it worked out and Derringer (nka Jake) and Vanilla (nka Nilla) are having lots of fun with each other and their new family! (No family photo)
