Max, Gomer

Max

Max, left, with his new family … Lisa, Doug & Larissa

This couple has been volunteering with GPI for quite a while and have had the opportunity to get to know the dogs better while they are working with them. The wife walks and helps train the dogs and she got to know one of our special boys during that time. She wanted to make him part of the family but she had 2 hurdles she needed to clear — convincing her husband that their current dog, Larissa, needed a playmate and making sure that Larissa would get along with the new addition. She was successful on both fronts and that cleared the way for Max to become a part of the family!!!

Gomer

Gomer, nka Theo, with his new family … Ashley, Garrett & Martin

There is some truth to the saying that someone was in the right place at the right time. The question in this case is who was in the right place at the right time — the couple or the dog or both? This particular dog came back to us yesterday from the Portland area because he was living with two old Italian Greyhounds who were bullying him and he never did anything to retaliate, just put up with it. The owners felt he would have a happier life in a different place. Then, a couple from Southern Washington arrived  to meet dogs and they just happened to have a 6 year old Italian Greyhound. We introduced everybody and everybody got along very well so Gomer, nka Theo, was on his way south with his new family!!!

Brew, Georgia, Nala, Sonic, Milly, Rizzy

Brew

Brew with his new family … Jaime, Jason, Mochi & Zuni (in red coat)

The first couple that came to the kennel was from Orcas Island and the husband has been in love with Greyhounds for many years but never had one (and was very excited to get one). They had two small dogs (a chihuahua & a chihuahua mix) so we were definitely looking for some special dogs. We actually found quite a few dogs that did not react to the small dogs so they had some work to do to make their selection. Interestingly, the first dog we brought out touched the husband’s heart and even brought a few tears to his eyes — he said he could feel the wonderful energy around the dog and even see a calm, loving aura. When they got outside, he was even more touched by this dog and, unfortunately, as nice as the other dogs were, they just couldn’t compete with Brew!!

Georgia

Georgia (left) with her new family … Daniel, Lauren & Lola (from Australia)

This couple has been wanting to adopt a sister for their Australian Greyhound, Lola, for a while, but their search has been slowed because they needed a cat friendly dog and we haven’t had very many of those lately. The wife fell in love with this dog as soon as she met her and then all she had to do was make sure her husband and Lola agreed. Thankfully, they not only agreed but they were also ready to take on a dog with tons of energy and commit to getting her the kind of exercise she would need to be happy and for the rest of the family to be happy. We think Georgia (whose nickname is Peach — for little Georgia Peach) found just the right place for her.

Nala

Nala (right) with her new family … Anne & Mulligan

The next lady came to the kennel with one specific dog that she wanted to meet. I think she already knew she was going to adopt her as long as she got along with her small Cairn terrier mix named Mulligan. When we introduced Mulligan to our “Uber” energetic girl, we all stood there with our fingers crossed hoping all would go well and then we stood there in awe as we watched the dogs get to know each other and play. And the nicest part of all is that this dog immediately connected with the lady and when we brought her out to go home, Nala greeted the lady with kisses and could hardly get out of the door fast enough — she knew she was going to HER home!!!!

Sonic

Sonic (nka Mac) with his new mom, Rachel, and her friend, Kevin

The next lady had a a lot of fun meeting quite a few dogs and narrowed the field down to two dogs with very different personalities — one boy and one girl. She spent quite a while with each dog and weighed all the pros and cons — the boy was calmer and the girl was more active & both were outgoing and liked being with people. At first she thought that the girl might be the best one, but, smartly, she pulled back and gave herself a little extra time to make her decision. She called me later that day to excitedly let me know that she had decided that Sonic, nka Mac, was the one for her — Greyt selection!!!

Milly

Milly (left, nka Lili) with her new family … Robin, David & Olwen (fka Baby)

The first couple has been looking off & on for a companion for their Irish girl, Olwen (fka Baby)— they have even tried a couple that ended up being way too interested in their cats. Since they needed a cat friendly dog, their search has been a little harder, but now they know that perseverance definitely pays off. They found a sweet, active girl that met all the criteria — she got along with the cat, Olwen and the husband and wife — can’t ask for more than that. The best part is that today is the wife’s birthday and she is so excited that Milly, nka Lili, is going to become an official family member on her birthday!!

Rizzy

Rizzy with her new parents, Caylan & Brittany

The next couple has fostered quite a few of our dogs for us through the years and the lady just happens to be one of our long-time employees. The couple recently moved to a house and felt that the time was right to adopt their own hound. They also have cats so they have been keeping an eye on the incoming dogs to see who is cat friendly so that they could hop on it as soon as they saw one that would fit their situation. They recently found a darling little black girl who is pretty shy and thought she might be the one. It took her a while to warm up to everybody, but when she did warm up and they could see a little more of her personality, there was no doubt that Rizzy was meant to be theirs!!

Wayne, Luis, Blitzen, Gabe, Bella

August 24, 2020

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Wayne

Wayne with his new parents, Selena & Patrick

The boy that got adopted today has been waiting quite a while for his new family. He found a wonderful couple today who not only appreciated how handsome he is (who wouldn’t?), but also appreciated his stellar personality and sweetness. He did have a little competition, but as the couple got to know the other dogs a little more, they realized that Wayne was hands down the best addition to their family!!!

Luis

Luis, nka Linus, with his new family … Bob, Liana, Luci & Linda

The first family was looking for a cat friendly hound. They have always had male dogs so they really wanted to adopt another male. Since we only had a couple of males available, they decided to look at the females too, but it was easy to see that the females just didn’t click with them. They liked all the dogs we showed them, but the minute that we brought out this light colored, brindle boy, they pretty much lit up. There was no doubt that Luis, nka Linus, was the one for them.

Blitzen

Blitzen (left) with his new family … Shawn, Sarah, Chloe & Charlie (fka Eli)

The next couple already has a couple of our Greyhounds and one of them is getting on in years so they thought this was a good time to find a playmate for their younger hound. They met some wonderful dogs (aren’t they all?), but they were the first ones to meet this one particular dog and they fell for him hook, line & sinker!!! Just so you know, they didn’t know any of the things about him that I am about to tell you until they had already made their choice. This beautiful blue boy is a superstar +++ — He won all sorts of championships and derbies and hearts!! They just knew that this dog would be the perfect addition to their home and Blitzen agreed!!

Gabe

Gabe with his new family … Sherry, Riley (Jack Russell), Romeo (IG) & Kate (Galga)

I’m not even sure what to say about this next lady except that she already has 10 dogs that she has rescued from all sorts of situations and has given them a wonderful home. Even though she already has a “few” dogs, she couldn’t wait to come meet our dogs. In fact, she had quite an event in her first try to come to the kennel (a fire broke out near her home and all her dogs had to be evacuated). Even though she had to turn around and go home to take care of her pups, a few days later she had everything under control and was ready to try again. This time everything worked and she met and adopted her new “love”, Gabe!!

Bella

Bella, nka Minty, with her new mom, Alex

This lady has never had a dog before and she was so excited to come meet the dogs. We had a nice list of dogs that we thought might be a good fit for her, but there was one in particular that we thought & hoped would be the best option. This doesn’t happen very often, but we never even needed to show her the second dog! They seemed to bond so quickly and I don’t think the lady ever let go of the dog until she had to leave the kennel. She has had to wait two long weeks while the dog was spayed, but when they were reunited, it was just as though they hadn’t been apart. Bella, nka Minty, recognized her new mom immediately and couldn’t wait to go home with her.
