greyhound

Aspen, Alder, Birch, Olive, Hazel

August 19, 2021

GPI’s Puppy Bonanza

Beautiful Naomi is a 5 year old greyhound mix. This lovely lady couldn’t be more sweet and gentle.A long story short, Naomi was pregnant and blessed us with five beautiful pups – born on June 18, 2021. There are two males (one black and one brindle) and three females (all brindle).

Thank you to their wonderful foster home for caring for mom and pups!!! And thank you to our wonderful vets at Bothell Pet Hospital who helped Naomi with a difficult birth!!!

Aspen

Aspen with her new family … Mike, Christina and their son

This family knows what it is like to have a Greyhound mix puppy because they have had one of our puppies before. When I kiddingly asked them if they were interested in another, I have to admit I was a little surprised when they said “absolutely”. They came to meet the puppies and, from the beginning, one person was interested in one dog and one preferred another. It was fun to watch them “discuss” the attributes of each dog and we honestly had no idea who was going to be adopted. But we were very excited for the whole family when they told us that Aspen was the one!!

Alder

Alder (in his mom’s arms) with his new family … Ruth, Penny & Caelyn

Then, a lady came with a friend to help the foster mother by playing with the puppies (isn’t that a fun volunteer job?). I’m pretty sure that when she was on her way to the play date, she had no idea that when she left, she would be seriously considering adopting one of the puppies. She even went so far as to text a picture of the puppy to her husband and I think she was pretty surprised when he said to bring it home!! The next step was for her husband to meet the puppies and watching him with the puppies was so much fun — he was like a little kid at Christmas!! We have no doubt that Alder has found himself a wonderful home!

Birch and Olive

Olive (left) & Birch with their new parents, Cathy & Tom

This couple lost their last Greyhound a while ago and they decided they were now ready to have their home filled with the patter of little feet (literally!). When they contacted us, they already knew exactly who they were interested and they had a plan for how they were going to make their home the best one for their new additions. They wanted two dogs and they picked the perfect pair because these two were already not only brother & sister but also best friends!! They are absolutely going to have their hands full but they couldn’t wait to take Birch & Olive home and get started on their lives together!!

Hazel

Hazel (in her mom’s arms) with her new family … Jordan, Chelsea, Drusilla (the Greyhound) & Scout

This couple has had some challenges that they have had to handle in a very short period of time in order to be able to adopt this dog. They needed to make some changes to their fencing and they took care of it in about 4 hours and they were ready to go!! Then they needed to make sure that their 14 year old Papillon, Scout, and their 8 year old Greyhound, Drusilla, were going to be happy with a new addition. Thankfully, that went beautifully!! When they came to meet this dog, it truly was just a formality because they knew that Hazel was going to be theirs before they even made the trip to the kennel!!!

Leon, Paige, Memphis

August 9, 2021

Leon

Leon with his new parents, Billy & Coco

The first adoption was to one of our employees and her husband. The employee fell in love with this particular dog the first time she saw him and all she had to do to adopt this guy was — convince her husband, wait until the dog was out of quarantine, have her home visit in her new home and keep her fingers crossed that the dog would get along with her 4 cats. That’s a pretty long list but she seemed to clear all of these hurdles pretty easily so it was time to officially adopt her sweet little blue boy from Asia, Leon!!

Paige

Paige with her new parents, Keith & Toni

The next couple has had quite a few of our Greyhounds through the years. Back in the time when we used to place a lot of dogs in foster homes, they took in many of our dogs and the only problem was that they often ended up adopting the dogs so they ran out of room for more fosters. About 5 or 6 months ago they lost their last hound and they decided they needed a little healing time before they took the plunge again, but thankfully, they realized they had a big hole in their lives and they needed a new furry baby to fill it. When they came in they had identified a few dogs of interest and they had fun meeting them but, then they met our energetic little black Whippet mix from Asia and that was that!! I don’t think it hurt any that this girl reminded them a little of one of their previous dogs, but whatever the attraction, they fell for Paige and couldn’t wait to take her home!!

Memphis

Memphis, right, with his new family … Mary & Frida

I have heard this person say about a zillion times “if you can see the floor, there is room for more” and she definitely believes that!! She has adopted and fostered many dogs through the years she has been involved with GPI — thank heavens. The latest dog that caught her attention was a boy who has been with us for quite a while and the lady thought he would be a perfect fit for her Irish Greyhound, Frida, who had been missing her sister who passed away recently. The two dogs got along beautifully and they actually could be twins except the male dog weighs about 20 pounds more than Frida. Frida picked out Memphis especially for herself — thank heavens her mother agreed!!!

Special Edition: Draft

July 16, 2021

Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares this special story from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Draft

Draft (center) with his new family … Jean Claude, Anna, Stanley, Gia (left) & Stanley

This adoption is one that we have been hoping would come and there are quite a few people who have worked with this dog to help him be able to adapt to a new home.

A couple of our volunteers have spent a lot of time helping him, but he probably made the most progress when one of our board members took him home as a foster and was able to work with him giving him consistent coaching!! That coaching in conjunction with the help of one of our trainers put him in the position to cope with more situations.

He found a family that knew they wanted him from the moment they saw him on our website. We are soooooo happy for Draft!!!!

Palma, Mallory, Poppy, Polk, Hope, Elmo, Anthony

July 12, 2021

Palma

Palma with her new family … Cynthia, Heather & Henry

A lady with a black lab mix named Henry and a cat was looking for a little girl that would fit in her home. Of course, when there is a cat involved, there is not a long list of dogs to choose from. But, that didn’t matter at all, they fell in love with our sweet little brindle girl named Palma so Henry officially has a new furry sister.

Mallory

Mallory (left) with her new family … Lauren, Jack & Elsie (fka Ivy)

Next, a couple came with the intention of getting one of our Whippets. They thought that the Whippets were greyt, but their current Greyhound, Elsie (fka Ivy) made it clear that she was NOT a fan. So, we started showing them the purebred dogs. There were three dogs that Elsie got along with and they were very interested in those three dogs who had very different personalities. There was a lot of discussion before they made their decision to adopt Miss Mallory!!

Poppy and Polk

Poppy (left) and Polk (nka Polka) with their new parents Paul & Jill

Our next adoptions were to a couple who also came with the intention of getting 2 dogs a few weeks ago. They have waited patiently for their dogs to be spayed and recover and they finally received the okay to go home. The two girls they selected are sisters — Polk (nka Polka) and Poppy — and they are sisters to Palma. It’s been family day at the adoption center! (Polk here)

Hope

Hope (right), nka Rosie, with her new family … Christa & Ripley

Next, the woman who adopted Ripley had noticed that he was much happier when he was around her partner’s two dogs. So she decided she needed to get him a buddy. Oh, BTW, she also needed a dog that would get along with her cat so, of course, that severely limited the choices. But, we had two little shy girls that we thought could be trained to like cats. The first one had no interest in even moving away from the door, but the second one started out that way and then as she gained a little confidence she was able to interact with the other dogs and we were even able to let them all off-leash. She really impressed her mother-to-be and Hope, nka Rosie, now has her new home!

Elmo

Elmo, nka Bowie, with his new family … Amanda, Jesse & Noah

This family came to find their new family member a couple of weeks ago but because of waiting for vet appointments and a previously planned trip, they couldn’t take the dog at that time, but the time had finally come. The dog that they picked gave them absolutely no choice in the matter — he came out and hugged them, cuddled, schmoozed & showed off. How on earth could they not make our sweet Lurcher Elmo, nka Bowie, part of their family?!

Anthony

Anthony (right) with his new family … Matt, Katie & Mabel

Then a couple brought their Dachshund, Mabel, in to find a new friend because she had recently lost her Greyhound and even though she had a kitty friend, she was lonely. We only had a couple of dogs that got along with cats and they were pretty much complete opposites and even though both dogs had lots of love to offer, it took them very little time to realize that one of our cute little Whippets from Asia was going to be theirs. This little guy was a real charmer … affectionate, outgoing, happy, smart … the list goes on and on! We know Anthony is going to be spoiled rotten just as he deserves!!!!

Benz, Rica, Dakota, Patience, Venus, Sharpy

July 8, 2021

Well, it’s about time that adoptions can finally start picking up!! We have had a lot of dogs pending while we waited for them to be spayed or neutered and, thankfully, we are almost to the end of this process. Quite a few dogs were “technically” adopted but they just couldn’t go anywhere until we got all the vet visits done and now their new families can take them home!!

Benz

Benz, nka Bailey, with her new family … Samantha, Colleen, Tinkerbell (on Samantha’s lap) & Scottie

It is well known that our Greyhounds do not always get along well with cats, different breeds of dogs and small dogs. Our most recent adoption was to a family that had 2 small dogs — a 3 pound Chihuahua named Tinkerbell and a roughly 11 year old Pomeranian mix named Scottie. They had just lost their sweet Grey girl and the were missing that wonderful Greyhound energy. It seems like they have a lot going on in the family and I asked why they were wanting another dog. They said it was because they needed some happy things to concentrate on to replace some of the sadness they’ve had lately. Well, they certainly found a wonderful girl to help create those new memories, Benz who is now known as Bailey!!!

Rica and Dakota

Rica (far left), nka Suki, and Dakota (4th from left), nka Niko, with their new family … Don, Ethan, Amy, Miranda and, (from left to right) Petra, Ivy & Bowie

This family brought their 3 Greyhounds and their 4 children (all teens and above) to find another Greyhound. Our first thought was how could they possibly handle another dog? But, we realized quickly that this family has it together and another dog would not be a problem for them. But, when the father said that he thought they should take two dogs, we were beginning to think they had completely taken leave of their senses!! But, again, they made believers of us. Soooo, amazingly, they were all able to agree that Dakota (nka Niko) and Rica (nka Suki) were going to be the new additions to their family!!

Patience

Patience (right), nka Peppercorn (Pepper for short), with her new family … Jena, Jeremy & Juni (fka Amy)

Next, a couple was looking for a new friend for their current Greyhound, Juni (fka Amy), who has been with them for about a year. They were looking for a girl and we tried a few combinations, but the truth is that we really don’t have a lot of girls to show right now. We even convinced them that they should at least meet one of our boys. But, Juni seemed the most comfortable with the girls and, of the girls she met, she was the most comfortable with Patience (nka Peppercorn, Pepper for short).

Venus

Next a family came to meet our Whippets and they had their eye on a particular little girl. It doesn’t happen very often that a family adopts the dog that they originally came to see, but it happened this time. This particular dog knew exactly how to worm her way into their hearts — lots of kisses and snuggling. It also helped that she was named after a planet and their daughter has changed her name to Pluto so they had a common bond. Luckily, she also got along well with the parents and their Greyhound, Rogue (fka CeeCee). So, our first Whippet to be adopted was Venus!

Sharpy

Sharpy (right), nka Gideon, with his new family … Neah, Geoffrey & Ophelia, fka Phoenix

The next couple came with their current Greyhound, Ophelia (fka Phoenix), and they thought that they were looking for a Whippet, but after meeting a couple of them, they realized that the Whippets were way more active than they were ready for. So we started introducing them to a few of our calmer Greyhounds and they fell for one of our handsome boys who couldn’t wait to go to his new home. They picked Sharpy who is now known as Gideon.
