Make and Chief

Make and Chief with their family Mike, Moira, Stoli, and Bill

These adoptions were actually finalized earlier, but we never sent out a note. This couple, especially the wife — our President, Moira — have spent countless hours trying to help all of us be able to adopt these precious dogs. It’s fun to see them add two lucky dogs to their family. One dog had a couple of things that he needed to work on and with their guidance, he has become the dog we knew he could be. The other dog came on the last Florida load and the owners specifically requested that he go home with them. Make & Chief are two lucky dogs — interestingly, after the dogs were adopted, they found out that these two boys have the same father!!

Piper

Piper with her new parents, Dabney & Angel

Things were really hopping at Hern Greytworks this weekend!  First, an engaged couple who are in the navy and based on Whidbey Island came in to get their first Greyhound. They are very active and were looking for a dog that can join them on runs, walks, hikes, bike rides and roaching on the couch. Even though they met a few dogs, it was pretty obvious that the first little lady they met wowed them and would most likely be going home with them. And that held true — they chose Piper and there is no doubt that she would be able to keep up with them and still have energy for more!!

Harvey

Harvey with his new dad, Pari and his friend, Autumn

Then a man came in looking for his new furry pal. We had already shown him a few dogs and were on the way to the yard for playtime when we ran into one more dog he could see. I’m sure you know where this is going — he completely fell for that dog and it wasn’t long after meeting the dog that he was headed home with Harvey!

Racket

Racket, nka Truffle, with her new parents, Lauren & Mark

This couple has wanted a Greyhound for a while and they were excited to come to the kennel a couple of weeks ago and adopt a dog. Everything went according to plan until we got to the actual adoption —unfortunately, the dog they were going to adopt still had to be spayed and wouldn’t be able to go home for another week. Then, when that week had passed, we found that the dog had two UTIs (urinary tract infections) that needed attention. Well, we got everything taken care of and she was finally ready to head home. Because her new mother is a Chocolatier, they decided that they were going to change their new girl’s name from Racket to Truffle!!

Babette

Babette (right) with her new family … Harris, Nick, Sarah & Sid.

The next family adopted one of our dogs, Sid, a couple of weeks ago. At that time, they also met another dog that they were very interested in and they decided they would really like to adopt 2 dogs. At first meeting the two dogs did not get along particularly well and we thought that it was because the second dog had not been spayed. We all decided we would introduce them again after the dog was spayed and see what happened. Happily, the two dogs did just fine and Sid now has a sister named Babette!

Ripley, Sid, Mia, Bob, Wylee, Bunny, Gold, Stan, Prissy

May 25, 2021

Ripley

Ripley with his new mom, Christa

This lady has had a rough time over the last month — she lost both of her Greyhounds during that time. So, she came to us to help her find a new buddy. She had an idea of the dogs that were interesting to her and we showed her those dogs and others we thought might work for her. But, after meeting all the dogs, she realized that the dog she wanted was the first one she had on her list — Ripley!

Sid

Sid with his new family … Sarah, Harris & Nick

The next family lost their boxer about 6 years ago and since they had a young child, they decided it was best to wait a while before getting another dog. The time had finally come and they were ready to share their home with a dog that would enjoy walks, hikes, playing in a big yard and soaking up all the attention the family had to give. As you can imagine, most of our dogs would love to be in that situation but since the family couldn’t take all of the dogs, they decided that Sid was going to be their new family member (but stay tuned, there may be more to come)!!

Mia

Mia with her new family … Anita & Alan

This couple came in a few weeks ago to meet our dogs and we really didn’t have one that fit their situation so we suggested that they check in with us in a few weeks. They called this week and we had just gotten a return that seemed like a good fit for them (this dog was a victim of a broken home and not a behavioral problem). They came in to meet her and fell in love right away. They couldn’t wait to share their home and big back yard with Mia.

Bob

Bob (right) with his new family … Bill and Rex (fka Revie)

This was a situation where the people and dogs involved really needed each other. The dad and his dog, Rex (fka Revie) lost the other fur baby of their group a couple of weeks ago and they were both missing him terribly. Our dog has been with us for quite a while and we truly couldn’t figure out why he hadn’t been adopted. I guess he was just waiting for this particular family because he sure knew they were his when he met them. All three seemed to fit together perfectly and they were very couldn’t wait to take Bob home!!  Bob was our May Dog of the Month!

Wylee

Wylee with his new family … Emily, Penny, Robbie, Isaac, Sammy & Chris

A family of 6 came to find a dog that would be their first “family” dog and they needed a dog that was able to cope with 4 children ranging in age from 4 to 10. You never know what dog will do well with young children since, as far as we know, they haven’t been around them before so we brought out quite a few dogs. Believe it or not, we actually found that quite a few of them did well with the kids so the family had a few dogs to choose from. It’s not always easy to get 6 people to agree, but this boy won their hearts and the decision was unanimous — they were going to take home a Lurcher (which is what Greyhounds mixes are called) named Wylee!!

Bunny

Bunny (right), nka Maizie, with her new family … Michele, Jason & Apollo

It’s so nice when a sad situation turns into a positive situation for the dog (and the people). We had a dog come back to us because her owner had some serious health problems and she couldn’t physically take care of the dog. At the same time, one of our employees was looking for a playmate for their 10 year old Greyhound, Apollo, and we were thinking that this returned dog would be a good fit for the family. Thankfully, this dog’s former mother knows that her dog has gone to a home where she is very loved and her current family has found a greyt addition to their family — way to go Bunny, nka Maizie!!

Gold

Gold with her new parents Allen & Susan

Some of our dogs had a very rough time before they came to us and the experiences they had have created some behaviors that have made it tough to find homes for them. In order to help these dogs, GPI hired a trainer to work with them and also to work with the new owners so they would understand the best way to handle different situations that might arise. It’s because of the trainer and the other volunteers that have worked with this dog that she had the chance to find her forever home. The couple that adopted her has had a lot of experience with Greyhounds and they have followed every instruction from the trainer while they were fostering her. We’re so thankful that our beautiful, blue girl from Macau, named Gold, has found her new family!!!

Stan

Stan and his new dad Damian

This adoption was to a man who has had Greyhounds before and since it has been a couple of years since he lost his last one he was ready for another. He had a lot of fun meeting quite a few of our dogs and we were just about to the end of our first round of showings but we thought we should bring out one more dog. When we brought the dog out, there was an obvious instant connection between him and the man. This was one of those situations where there were a lot of signs that this match would be good for both of them, such as — the man has experience with dogs and especially Greyhounds/the dog is a touch stubborn and might take advantage of someone with no experience; the man has a single story house/ this dog won’t do steps (he can but he won’t). The most important thing was that this man fell in love with Stan as soon as he met him!!!

Prissy

Prissy, nka Seaver, with her new family … Eva, Keegan (Whippet in the middle) & Morgan (Coonhound)

The lady that we worked with today has been a volunteer with GPI for quite a few years and she has had 5 Greyhounds. Now she has a Coonhound named Morgan and a Whippet named Keegan and she decided she had to have a Greyhound again.  She also has two cats so she did not have a lot of dogs to choose from but that didn’t make any difference to her. She only saw one dog and that dog is pretty shy, but when the dog was in the yard with Morgan & Keegan she seemed to relax and even play with them. Everybody got along well and the lady decided she didn’t need to see any other dogs — Prissy, nka Seaver, was the one for them!!

Bella, Figgy, Barry

May 11, 2021

Bella

Bella (right), nka Busy Bee (Busy for short), with her new family … Everett, Trisha & Seymour

The first dog that was adopted was a sweet little girl that came back to us because of some health problems. Luckily, she has responded to the treatments she has been getting and she’s getting healthier every day (and gaining a few much needed pounds)!! She has found a new family which already includes one of our Greys who used to be known as Kevin and is now known as Seymour. They all welcomed their new addition, Bella, who is now known as Busy Bee (Busy for short)!!

Figgy

Figgy (right) with his new family … Rose, Will and Lang

Next, one of our employees and her partner have moved to a house and were ready to add another grey to their family (they already have Lang). They have had their eyes on one of our special boys who has been with us for quite a while. He came to us with an injury to his leg and that needed to heal before he could leave us. Thank you to the team of volunteers who have come to the kennel every day of the week for the last few months to get this guy on the Theraplate — that, plus the guidance from his doctors, has helped speed up his recovery and he’s finally ready for his new home. His new family couldn’t wait to officially make Figgy part of the family!!!

Barry

Barry with his new parents, Kylie & Mike

Sometimes people decide immediately which dog they want and sometimes it takes a while to figure things out. This particular couple fell into the latter category. They have had dogs, but since this would be the first Greyhound they welcomed to their home, they wanted to take their time to think things through and be as sure as they could that they were making the right decision. They saw quite a few dogs and quickly narrowed the list down to two big boys both of which were very good at schmoozing and worming their way into their potential parents’ hearts. These two dogs had many similar characteristics which is why the people had a difficult time making their final decision. But, when all was said and done, Barry was heading off to his new home.

Mega, Rock

April 29, 2021

Mega

Mega with part of his new family — Kevin and Jude

This is a greyt example of how the publicity we do can work. Last week, one of pictures from the Bright Water walk was on Facebook. A family that already has a couple of our dogs saw the dog and fell in love with this guy. They debated about whether they should come meet him because they knew that if they did, they would adopt him (and they already have 3 Greyhounds). It went just the way they thought it would — they met Mega and made the decision to adopt him right away!!!

Rock

Rock with his new parents, Jason & Amelie

This couple recently lost their wonderful Greyhound boy and they have been missing that Greyhound presence in their home. They still have lots of love to give and they were ready to give it to another Grey. So, they came to the kennel with a list of wonderful dogs they would like to see and they had a wonderful time oooing and aahing over each dog. But they knew they could only take one and even though it was difficult to rule out the others, they decided on our very handsome, red brindle boy with the wonderful helicopter tail — Rock!!!

Max, Gomer

April 13, 2021

Max

Max, left, with his new family … Lisa, Doug & Larissa

This couple has been volunteering with GPI for quite a while and have had the opportunity to get to know the dogs better while they are working with them. The wife walks and helps train the dogs and she got to know one of our special boys during that time. She wanted to make him part of the family but she had 2 hurdles she needed to clear — convincing her husband that their current dog, Larissa, needed a playmate and making sure that Larissa would get along with the new addition. She was successful on both fronts and that cleared the way for Max to become a part of the family!!!

Gomer

Gomer, nka Theo, with his new family … Ashley, Garrett & Martin

There is some truth to the saying that someone was in the right place at the right time. The question in this case is who was in the right place at the right time — the couple or the dog or both? This particular dog came back to us yesterday from the Portland area because he was living with two old Italian Greyhounds who were bullying him and he never did anything to retaliate, just put up with it. The owners felt he would have a happier life in a different place. Then, a couple from Southern Washington arrived  to meet dogs and they just happened to have a 6 year old Italian Greyhound. We introduced everybody and everybody got along very well so Gomer, nka Theo, was on his way south with his new family!!!
