adoption

Ivy, Erick, Pistol, Rudy, Weaver, Silli, Hermes

March 24, 2021

Adoptions have finally picked up and I have quite a few to tell you about. Quite a few of these people have been playing “the waiting game” for a variety of reasons so they are excited to get their hounds home.

Ivy

Ivy, nka Elsie, with her new parents Jack & Lauren

First, a couple came to look at dogs right before they were leaving on a vacation to Palm Springs. They fell in love with a little spitfire girl, but weren’t ready to adopt until they got back from their trip. This dog is so special that they actually considered changing their plans so they could get her sooner! However, they came to their senses and took their trip and immediately came to the kennel to adopt Ivy, nka Elsie, as soon as their plane landed!!

Erick

Erick, right, with his new family … Conrad, Stephanie, Heff (left) & Buttercup

Next, a couple came a few weeks ago to meet the last cat friendly dog we had. They had high hopes when they arrived with their two other dogs (Heff & Buttercup) for introductions and, thankfully, everybody got along very well so they decided to adopt this guy. Unfortunately, they were not going to be able to take him home for a few weeks because he needed to be neutered and, he was the last dog scheduled. Luckily, time flew by and they got to take our (I guess I should say “their”) sweet boy, Erick, home to meet his new kitty siblings.

Pistol

Pistol, right, with his new family … Mike, Po & Riff

Next, a couple who had recently lost one of their hounds brought their 10 year old Grey, Riff, to pick out a new brother. Riff got along with everyone!!! That is greyt, but it makes it harder on the parents because they have to do the hard work and make the decision! And, this decision was especially hard because any of the dogs on their short list would have been a greyt addition to the family. But, after some deliberation, they chose Pistol!

Rudy and Weaver

Rudy, left, & Weaver (nka Wyatt) & their new parents Val & Eric

The next couple lost three dogs in a short period of time and they could not wait to get here and find their new fur babies. At first, we thought we were looking for one dog, but quickly figured out they really wanted to adopt two dogs so we needed to adjust the cast of characters a bit. They had fun meeting all the dogs and getting all that much needed attention that had been lacking since they lost their other pups. After doing some “mixing and matching”, they decided on two kennel favorites — Rudy & Weaver, nka Wyatt!!

Silli and Hermes

Silli, nka Sylvie (left), & Hermes with their new dad, Mike

Finally, one of our volunteers and new board member came to adopt. He had tried to adopt a couple of times before, but his previous dog made it absolutely clear that she was not going to share her daddy with any other dog!! Since she recently went to the Bridge, he was now able to adopt and he decided to take two. He pretty much knew who he was interested in because he regularly does turnout so the only thing we had to do was see who got along with who. And, the lucky dynamic duo was Hermes & Silli, nka Sylvie!!

Fern, Speedy

March 16, 2021

Fern

Fern (left) with her new family … Nanz, Sasha, Gary & Coco

This couple recently lost one of their Greyhounds and the one that was left (Coco) was pretty lonely. Of course, they needed and wanted to get another Greyhound and they had their hearts set on a couple of our females, but, by the time they got to the kennel, those dogs had been adopted. They were a little disappointed, but we had a little girl who was just about ready to go to a home that we showed them and their disappointment quickly went away. The whole family fell in love with her as soon as they met here & it was unanimously decided that Fern was the one for them!

Speedy

Speedy (left) with his new dad, Zac, and fur sister, Lily

This adopter was a man who already has a sweet black Grey named Lily. He decided that even though he was working from home, she seemed lonely and could benefit from having a friend. Lily got along with most of the dogs so it was up to him to narrow the list of dogs down and he was able to reduce the list to two. After he made his final choice, he said that he had felt a connection with Speedy as soon as he met him!!

Phoenix, Chava, Clair Bear, Zoe, Scarlet, Keota, Zanny, Hobo, Minnie

March 2, 2021

Phoenix

Phoenix, nka Ophelia (Phee for short), with her new parents Neah and Geoffrey

This couple came looking for a nice calm dog and they pretty much had their hearts set on one particular little lady. As I’ve mentioned before, really calm Greyhounds are few and far between, but we did come up with a few other options for them. But, none compared to that sweet fawn girl, Phoenix who is now known as Ophelia (Phee for short)!

Chava

Chava with her new mom, Abby, and her friend, Aidan

The next lady came with a long list of dogs that she thought would be possibilities. We narrowed the list down quite a bit as we learned more about her and her lifestyle, but there were still some really cool dogs to see. She narrowed it down to three dogs with very different sizes, personalities and exercise needs. And, at first, I think we were all a little surprised when she chose the biggest girl we have, but after watching them together, it was obvious that Chava was the perfect choice!!

Clair Bear and Zoe

Clair Bear, nka Nina
Zoe

A couple (who have put in a lot of time volunteering at GPI doing booths, home visits, dremmeling at spa days, bathing dogs & more) had usually had boy dogs and this time they thought it would be fun to have a girl. They already had a wonderful Greyhound boy named Edge so it was obviously very important that he choose a dog he liked. Edge is such a sweetheart and he gets along with everyone so he was not a whole lot of help. They decided on one of our girls and as we were getting ready to do the paperwork, the lady said that she would take two dogs if she could and the man said he didn’t know why they couldn’t take two dogs. It was as simple as that and they adopted Clair Bear (nka Nina) and Zoe!! (No family photo at this time)

Scarlet

Scarlet

The next family was looking to be a new member of the Greyhound owner family. They also were looking for a girl and we showed them pretty much all of the ones we had. They were wanting to steer away from the black dogs because their last dog was black. I’m sure you know what happened — they took home a cute little black girl named Scarlet!! (No family photo yet)

Keota

Keota

Then came a man who has a friend with a Greyhound. He has been getting to know the breed through his friend and her dog and decided that he would like one. He saw a mix of boys and girls and we introduced all of them to his friend’s dog. The dog got along with all of the dogs so it was hard to tell if he had a preference. So, the man had to make the decision on his own and he chose Keota! (Sorry, no family photo yet)

Zanny

Zanny

Another couple came in to get a buddy for their dog named Sadie (she was formerly known as Georgette). One of the ladies has been doing turnout for a while to meet the dogs and pick out a list of dogs to show her partner. She did a Greyt job of making a list of super dogs to show her partner — they loved all the dogs & Sadie liked most of them so they had to do the hard work and pick their new dog! Both of the ladies agreed that the best dog for their family was Zanny (she just happens to be Zoe’s sister!!). (No family photo yet)

Hobo

Hobo

The next couple wanted a girl and, unfortunately, they only had a couple of girls to choose from so they decided to relax their criteria a bit and decided they wanted to see some boys. It took a little time for them to talk through all the dogs and decide that Hobo was the one for them. (No family photo)

Minnie

Minnie, nka Hilde

Last, but not least, a couple (that includes one of our employees) came and they needed a dog that would get along with their two cats. Since our employee had a chance to get to know the dogs while she was was working, she narrowed the field of dogs that she wanted her partner to see and, luckily, he liked the same dog she did — Minnie — nka Hilde!! (No family photo)

Brew, Georgia, Nala, Sonic, Milly, Rizzy

February 15, 2021

Brew

Brew with his new family … Jaime, Jason, Mochi & Zuni (in red coat)

The first couple that came to the kennel was from Orcas Island and the husband has been in love with Greyhounds for many years but never had one (and was very excited to get one). They had two small dogs (a chihuahua & a chihuahua mix) so we were definitely looking for some special dogs. We actually found quite a few dogs that did not react to the small dogs so they had some work to do to make their selection. Interestingly, the first dog we brought out touched the husband’s heart and even brought a few tears to his eyes — he said he could feel the wonderful energy around the dog and even see a calm, loving aura. When they got outside, he was even more touched by this dog and, unfortunately, as nice as the other dogs were, they just couldn’t compete with Brew!!

Georgia

Georgia (left) with her new family … Daniel, Lauren & Lola (from Australia)

This couple has been wanting to adopt a sister for their Australian Greyhound, Lola, for a while, but their search has been slowed because they needed a cat friendly dog and we haven’t had very many of those lately. The wife fell in love with this dog as soon as she met her and then all she had to do was make sure her husband and Lola agreed. Thankfully, they not only agreed but they were also ready to take on a dog with tons of energy and commit to getting her the kind of exercise she would need to be happy and for the rest of the family to be happy. We think Georgia (whose nickname is Peach — for little Georgia Peach) found just the right place for her.

Nala

Nala (right) with her new family … Anne & Mulligan

The next lady came to the kennel with one specific dog that she wanted to meet. I think she already knew she was going to adopt her as long as she got along with her small Cairn terrier mix named Mulligan. When we introduced Mulligan to our “Uber” energetic girl, we all stood there with our fingers crossed hoping all would go well and then we stood there in awe as we watched the dogs get to know each other and play. And the nicest part of all is that this dog immediately connected with the lady and when we brought her out to go home, Nala greeted the lady with kisses and could hardly get out of the door fast enough — she knew she was going to HER home!!!!

Sonic

Sonic (nka Mac) with his new mom, Rachel, and her friend, Kevin

The next lady had a a lot of fun meeting quite a few dogs and narrowed the field down to two dogs with very different personalities — one boy and one girl. She spent quite a while with each dog and weighed all the pros and cons — the boy was calmer and the girl was more active & both were outgoing and liked being with people. At first she thought that the girl might be the best one, but, smartly, she pulled back and gave herself a little extra time to make her decision. She called me later that day to excitedly let me know that she had decided that Sonic, nka Mac, was the one for her — Greyt selection!!!

Milly

Milly (left, nka Lili) with her new family … Robin, David & Olwen (fka Baby)

The first couple has been looking off & on for a companion for their Irish girl, Olwen (fka Baby)— they have even tried a couple that ended up being way too interested in their cats. Since they needed a cat friendly dog, their search has been a little harder, but now they know that perseverance definitely pays off. They found a sweet, active girl that met all the criteria — she got along with the cat, Olwen and the husband and wife — can’t ask for more than that. The best part is that today is the wife’s birthday and she is so excited that Milly, nka Lili, is going to become an official family member on her birthday!!

Rizzy

Rizzy with her new parents, Caylan & Brittany

The next couple has fostered quite a few of our dogs for us through the years and the lady just happens to be one of our long-time employees. The couple recently moved to a house and felt that the time was right to adopt their own hound. They also have cats so they have been keeping an eye on the incoming dogs to see who is cat friendly so that they could hop on it as soon as they saw one that would fit their situation. They recently found a darling little black girl who is pretty shy and thought she might be the one. It took her a while to warm up to everybody, but when she did warm up and they could see a little more of her personality, there was no doubt that Rizzy was meant to be theirs!!

Maggie, Benni, Dancer, Goldie, Donna, Brittany

February 8, 2021

Maggie

Maggie with her new parents Sabine & Lance

This couple came to get their first Greyhound together. The husband has already had two Greyhounds and he could not wait to get another one and, apparently, he was able to convince his wife that was a wonderful idea. He and his wife have had a wide variety of dogs and they thought that a male Greyhound would be a perfect addition to their family. I’m sure you know where this is going … of course, they ended taking home a sweet little brindle girl named Maggie!!!

Benni

Benni with her new mom & dad, Matthew & Amanda

There is not much mystery about this adoption — this couple saw their future dog on one of the websites, fell in love at first sight, had a home visit and came to meet their dog. They were so sure that they were going to adopt this dog that they were putting messages on Instagram about the dog they were adopting before they even met her. Luckily, this little charmer from South Korea lived up to everything they were hoping and Benni

Dancer

Dancer (nka Gilly) with her new parents Kirby and KyRae

The first couple was from Eastern Washington and they were looking to adopt their first dog together. They didn’t need to see many dogs before they knew which one was theirs. When they met this particular dog, they both connected with her immediately and said she was their top choice. But the real signs that dog was going to be theirs were that the wife choked up when the dog came out to play with them in the yard and the deal was really sealed when the lady started to tear up while they played!! I don’t think we could have talked them out of adopting this dog if we tried and, of course, we wouldn’t have tried because Dancer (nka Gilly) obviously felt she was part of their family at once!!!

Goldie

Goldie (right) with her new family … Jacob, Jessica & Roman

Next was a couple who recently moved up here from Oregon and they were looking for a buddy for their 9 year old Grey named Roman. Roman was really easy — he got along with everyone — so the couple had to make the decision about which dog would be theirs. It wasn’t an easy decision but they decided on our sweet little fawn girl “who has been a bridesmaid many times and never the bride”, Goldie!!

Donna

Donna, nka Daphne, with her new family … Joon & Mabel, fka Megan

This man had a Greyhound and had been looking for a companion for himself & Mabel (fka Megan). He did turnout as soon as we got the new load and prescreened the dogs and came up with a couple of dogs he really hoped his dog would get along with. He did a great job because she got along with both. Then he was having to make the choice and was having a hard time deciding which dog would work best so, since we knew either dog would work with Mabel, we suggested he spend time with each of them without Mabel. One dog spent the whole time trying to get back in the building and the other couldn’t get enough attention from him. Guess which one he chose — Donna who is now known as Daphne!!!

Brittany

Brittany with her new parents Kimiko & Pierre-Ives

This next couple was finally in a place where they could add a Greyhound to their family. Actually, the wife had been wanting a Greyhound for 20 years (even though she didn’t even look nearly old enough to have wanted a dog for that long) and was very excited to finally be able to adopt. They looked at quite a variety of dogs and were able to narrow it down to two dogs — one male and one female. They were having difficulty deciding and we pointed out that they needed to stop thinking from their heads and, instead, listen to their feelings. When we asked which one they felt the strongest connection to, they both said the same name simultaneously without even thinking!! So the question was answered and decision made in one instant and Brittany was headed to her new home!!
