Meet Hero: April Dog of the Month – ADOPTED!!

April 25, 2020

herosupertitle
Please contact Moira Corrigan ([email protected]) for more information about Hero.

Hero - ADOPTED!!
Tag No: 6462
Registered Name: VJ Super Hero
Breed: Greyhound
Date of Birth:  June 20, 2016
Color: White/Black
Cat Trainable: No
Dog Friendly: Ok with greyhounds, No small dogs
Kid Friendly: Unknown
Location: Woodinville, WA (Kennel)
Comments:  Hero is a fun upbeat boy.  He is friendly, outgoing, curious about new things and loves to run.  He is Mr. Personality.  Hero also enjoys affection, leaning, and hanging with you as well as a good run.  Hero had some injuries to some of his toes and one of his toes has been amputated.  Due to the injury on another toe, Hero does best walking on softer surfaces and would not make a great hiking buddy.  While he has the energy and interest, his toe injury does not allow for long walks and rough surfaces.  Hero will need a home without cats or small dogs.  Hero would do best in a home with a fenced yard and not an apartment situation where he would have to walk on a lot of hard surfaces.

Our sweet, fun, playful brindle boy Saturn went to his forever home. He knew something good was happening. His new family was so excited to come and take him home. You will be missed but you are going to have so much love and fun with your new family which includes male Greyhounds.

Pepper

Handsome & hairy Pepper from South Korea was adopted today!! One more journey to Canada and his forever home. 🙂 I am so sad but I know two happy people and a very happy hound. Pepper our very special, adorable boy was adopted today. He is now a Canadian and I miss him already. I think he will be way too busy to miss us much though. Happy life sweet boy.

Alphie

Alphie

Alphie, the first of four dogs from Ireland was adopted!! Alphie, now known as Logan was adopted today and he will be living really close so hopefully we will get to see him frequently. Flashback: True, Rambo, Sawyer, Holly, Jack

April 6, 2020

We’re taking a little walk down memory lane with today’s Adoption Tails – here’s a few stories from 2014/2015 and our story teller is Marchet. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

True

True

The very sweet and very handsome brindle boy True was quickly adopted today. (Saturday) His new mom came with her female grey to pick out a new male friend. She saw one male and then out came True. He really showed her that he wanted to go home with them. It didn’t take more than 5 or 10 minutes for that decision to be made. The dogs sure do know what they want. Since both the 2 legged and 4 legged females really like him…………it was a done deal. -Marchet

Rambo

Rambo

Rambo was adopted today! Handsome red boy Rambo won out over the other boys at the kennel to go home today. He was a very happy boy. His new dad, who is tall and lanky like a greyhound was very excited. -Marchet

Sawyer

Sawyer

Today the very handsome white and fawn darling affectionate Sawyer was adopted. He will be leading a very interesting life. Most of his time will be spent on the very large ship where his dad is Captain. Don’t worry the ship is in port most of the time where there are close by areas where he can get lots of exercise. Most of all he will get lots of love. -Marchet

Holly

Holly

This family already had 2 females from us. Since one was getting old and didn’t want to play as much they along with the 2 girls decided that Holly was the right one for them. -Marchet

Jack

Jack

Jack, the very handsome red boy picked his new mom today. She saw one male and then we brought Jack out….that was it. He convinced her that there was absolutely no reason to see anyone else. Usually I say you are here you might as well look at a few more. I didn’t bother today. That really was it. Love at first sight. -Marchet

Maura, Paco, Snookie, Bishop, Oxie

March 30, 2020

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Maura

Maura, nka Carly, with her new parents … Barry & Shana

Even if you have had many dogs, losing two dogs in less than a year is tough and everyone reacts differently — some people feel the need to get another dog right away and some need to have a little time to regroup. Each member of this couple was on the opposite side of the fence. However, shortly after this couple lost their dog, a beautiful female Greyhound came back to us through no fault of her own – she was very loved but a member of the family was suffering severe allergies because of the dog. They were devastated to give her up. I think the Universe, with some help from its earthling helpers (including a wife who couldn’t wait any longer for a new addition), conspired to get this dog together with this couple. All it took was a nice walk, some leaning and schmoozing from the dog and the couple was pretty much putty in her hands. Thank heavens — Maura/Luna, nka Carly, found a place with a couple who had plenty of love for her and vice versa!!!!

Paco

Paco (left) with his new family … April, Steve & Norman

The first couple lost their 5 year old Greyhound to Osteo a couple of days ago and they needed a new family member for their 12 year old boy, Norman, and for themselves. Norman is such a sweetheart and so easy to get along with that the screening process, which he was in charge of, didn’t seem to eliminate many dogs. So, the parents had to jump in and do the hard work! From the very beginning, they were smitten with a very handsome brindle boy who was very affectionate, but had so much energy, they wanted to make sure they could handle him. After seeing a wide variety of dogs, they kept coming back to this boy and they decided they could absolutely handle him and Paco had to be a member of the family!!

Snookie

Snookie with her new parents, Grant & Olivia

The next couple were school teachers who have the next 6 weeks off and decided that there couldn’t be a better time to bring a dog into their lives (BTW, we’re hoping there are a lot of other people out there who feel the same way!!!!). They were thinking that a calm girl would fit their situation the best and we set off to find just that (keep in mind that “calm” and “girl” do not always go together!). They saw quite a few dogs and weren’t sure who was going to be the best one for them. But, as it usually happens, once they spent some time outside with the dogs, one of them quickly made it obvious that she was the one for them — Snookie!!

Bishop and Oxie

Bishop (left) & Oxie with their new parents, Gabbie & Kai

This couple has been thinking about getting a Greyhound for around two years, but they wanted to get everything in order first … like graduating from college, getting married and renting a house with a yard. Now that all is in order and they are both going to be working from home for a while, the time is finally right. They came in thinking they would adopt one dog and come back quickly to get a second one, but that changed when they met two dogs that they thought would be a very good fit for them. The million dollar question was “how would the two dogs get along with each other”? Thankfully and luckily, they did get along very well, so Oxie and Bishop headed off to their new home near Northgate in Seattle.

Danica

Danica’s portrait

The next lady has fostered a few dogs for us when we needed her and her foster failure rate has been wonderful — 100%!!! When she offered to help us the last time we asked for foster homes, I’ll be honest, I had my fingers crossed she would fail again! And, she didn’t let me, or the cute little fawn girl she was fostering, down!! Hooray, today Danica is officially part of the family!!!!

It Takes A Village, Coming Home

March 21, 2020

In these difficult times it is important to remember how all the helping hands make a tremendous difference in the lives of each dog we touch.

This story is an example of just that!

Thank you so much Robin for sharing your touching journey of Max coming home.

It really does take a village of big hearts, working together towards a common goal to improve the life of each dog that passes our way.

Thank you everyone for all you do to help the dogs.

The Story of Max

by Robin James

Max in the UAE

“I didn’t sleep a wink.  I kept watching him all night to see if he was still breathing”.

That’s how it was for Rita the first four nights, and then for Randy and I after Christmas.

Max arrived at the kennel on November 30th, 2019 along with Safa, Sabna and Tamara rescued from the desert in the United Arab Emirates.  The following 23 days would slowly reveal that he was either very ill, or very depressed, or both.

Max didn’t eat

Mary helps Max eat

The kennel updates were always the same:  “Max didn’t eat.”  “Max only ate ½ his dinner even after goodies”. “Max didn’t have a good appetite tonight”. “Max did not finish his left down dinner and only picked at his breakfast”.  And so on……

Shut down, disengaged, and losing ground

Max was shut down

The veterinarians could not confirm that anything terrible was going on with him, yet he was shut down, disengaged and losing ground.

The information we got about him was that he had been with a family (we do not know how long, or how old he is for that matter). When the family moved out of the country, they chose not to buy a ticket for Max and left him at a shelter.

A 24/7 vigil of watching, worrying

On December 22nd, 2019 when Rita sent me a photo of Max in his run and said, “He needs us”……My answer was, “bring him home tonight”.

“He needs us,” Rita said.

So began a 24/7 vigil of watching, worrying, loving, petting, and trying anything to get him to eat, or even getting him to look us in the eye.

After days of pitching out cooked chicken, boiled eggs, liver, cubed cheddar, numerous canned foods, cottage cheese and “you name it we tried it”, he started to take bits of chicken by hand.

Generous and caring GPI volunteers gave gift cards, made donations and even bought him a new bowl.

He started gaining weight

When I could get him to eat, it was only human food, or very cheap canned dog food and only then by hand.  He would not touch kibble or any good quality dog food.  But that was OK – we went with it, as long as he ate.  He started gaining weight.

The vets started him on a new medicine even though they had not diagnosed him with anything conclusive.

Max slowly started to come back alive

He slowly started to come back alive.  The first time he actually got up from his bed, and came into the kitchen while I was fixing their food, I knew he was beginning to re-connect with memories.  He started to make brief eye contact when we spoke to him, instead of staring blankly off into the distance.  Then an amazing thing happened.  One afternoon I was talking to him, and he started to very slowly wag his tail!  Then the next day Rita came over to visit him and she got a wag too!!!

A few days later, he started picking at his food actually out of his new white ceramic bowl, instead of waiting for me to hand feed him.

I started worrying less about him dying, and looked forward to the next heartwarming sign that he’s going to be OK.

Bright, happy, twirling and eating

So today…….February 17th, 2020, he’s amazing!

He’s bright, happy, twirling and eating everything in sight!  (He’s even a sneaky counter-surfer)!

And…..when he gazes into my eyes, I can see in his sweet face that whatever bad memories, or demons were taking him away from us are now fading away………

Max…….You are loved sweet boy.

You are loved, sweet boy.
