Dewy, Ark, Scarlet, Ring, Akiva, Patsy

September 30, 2020

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Dewy

Dewy (right & nka Twyla) with her new family … Joni & Kelly

The lady that came first was looking for a companion for her Greyhound, Kelly. Just as an aside, Kelly was a very shy girl when this lady originally took her home and she has totally blossomed into a wonderful dog. Kelly had the honor of picking her new sister and she did one heck of a job. Kelly loves to dig and her mom put in two sand pits that are the dogs areas and if they want to dig to China, nobody will be upset. She picked Dewy (nka Twyla) without even knowing that she loved to dig — sounds like these two will get along just fine!!

Ark

Ark, nka Rocco, with his new family … Juju, Desi, Karol & Pluto (the Dachshund)

Next a lady brought her two daughters to the kennel to find their first Greyhound. They already have a one year old Dachshund named Pluto who was obviously a big part of the decision process. This family had totally done their homework — they could practically repeat the home visit information to us!! They met a couple of neat dogs, but the best dog was pretty much bomb-proof — he didn’t react to Pluto barking or anything else – so it was very obvious that Ark (nka Rocco) was the best fit for this family.

Scarlet

Scarlet (right) with her new family … Ashley, Josh and her foster sister, Texas

The next couple has been recovering from the loss of their 100 pound Greyhound a while ago and they decided they were ready for another dog. They came to the kennel to meet one particular dog who is very shy and they were unbelievably patient with her and ready to let everything go at her pace. This particular dog wasn’t ready to go home yet so in the meantime the couple also took on fostering our dog, Texas, while she recovers from a broken leg. The interesting part is that Texas weighs about 40 pounds and the other dog weighs almost 50 pounds — together they don’t weigh as much as the couple’s other dog. Finally, the original dog they selected was ready to go home and it was quite an event since this is the first time the two dogs have met. Thankfully, Scarlet and her foster sister hit it off immediately and we think they are going to be greyt buddies who help each other blossom!!

Ring

Ring, nka Smoky, with his new family … Matt, Jackson, Haleigh & Deanna

A family with kids who are 4 & 7 lost their last Greyhound around a year ago and they were ready to welcome another male Greyhound into their home. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? No way!!! We introduced them to a wide variety of dogs and narrowed it down to a few that we thought might be possibilities, but when we got them out into the yard and got the kids wound up (running & screaming — at our request), those dogs were ready to chase and pounce on the kids so we ruled them out. We finally thought of one other possibility and after putting him through every test we could think of and having the family spend a long time with him in the yard, they decided that Ring, nka Smoky, was their new family member!!!

Akiva

Akiva, nka Goose, with his new mom, Erika

This adoption was pretty easy. The lady came looking for a dog that would enjoy more moderate exercise and we had one dog in particular that we thought would work well. We showed that dog and a few others, but from the moment the lady met Akiva, nka Goose, she only had eyes for him!!!

Patsy

Patsy, nka Nightly, with her new dad, Alex, and his friend Jane

Actually, the next adoption was pretty easy too. This is an example of what can happen when you involve a trainer to help you prepare for your new dog. This man did not have much experience with dogs but he had a couple of meetings with a trainer and did turnout a few times before he was ready to adopt. While he was doing turnout, he fell in love with a sweet little black girl named Patsy, nka Nightly, and knew she was the one for him!!

Cherry

Cherry, nka Gina, with her new parents … Teresa & Jon

Next, a couple came in to get a dog and, while the lady had owned dogs before and she was prepared for what it would be like to own a Greyhound, this would be the man’s first dog and he was noticeably uncomfortable with the dogs. We gave some suggestions of some training he could do and when they came back to make their final selection, it was so obvious that he was much more comfortable with the dogs and he was excited to take home their new addition, Cherry (nka Gina – which just happens to be part of her racing name!!).

Harley

Harley (right), nka Kermit, with his new family … Tim, Natalie, Skelly (left) (fka Keystone)  & Otter

Then, a couple showed us the meaning of “if you can see the floor, there is room for more”!! They already have two of our dogs — Skelly (fka Keystone) & Otter — and they thought that they really needed another dog who would play with 2 year old Otter. Since Skelly is a little older, he isn’t quite as active and he is happier being the boss instead of having to entertain anybody. It really didn’t take long to find a dog that was respectful of Skelly’s authority and playful enough to keep Otter busy — Harley (nka Kermit)!!

Draft

Draft, nka Bentley, with his new aunt, Leonie, her dog Max, and his mother, Michelle

About a month ago, a lady came to meet the dogs and she needed a dog that could get along with her sister’s small dog, Max. We showed her quite a few dogs, but we struck out all the way around. It wasn’t Max’s problem, but our dogs were looking at him as prey instead of a playmate. This lady didn’t give up and she came back to meet a dog that she had seen on FB — the board member that had walked him at Brightwater posted a note that he was non-reactive to small dogs and the lady couldn’t wait to introduce him to Max. We were all thrilled that Draft (nka Bentley) and Max got along greyt and had a wonderful time playing in the yard!!!!

Fran

Fran with her new family … Mike, Marion & Hazard

This couple who has had a couple of our special needs dogs decided they were missing that wonderful Greyhound energy and it was time to get some more of that in their home. They have a few Border Collies so it was important to get a dog that would work with the pack so they brought their dog Hazard to be the guinea pig. Interestingly, all of the dogs that they saw were “cow” dogs (for those of you who aren’t familiar with that term, it means black & white). One of the dogs showed a little too much interest in Hazard so the field was narrowed down to two and the dog they took home was sweet little Fran!!

Cobi

Cobi with his new mom, Georgina

The first couple has a Greyhound named Leggs and a Golden Retriever named Indy. When they brought the dogs in to meet the Greyhounds, they were thinking that Leggs might be a little particular about who would fit in to their family and they thought Indy might be even more particular. But as we started introducing them to potential buddies, they seemed to agree on their feelings for each of the dogs and they unanimously voted for Cobi to be their new brother!

Brew

Brew (nka Perseus) with his new mom, Amanda

This last appointment went unbelievably fast. We introduced the lady to a couple of dogs and then we brought out one last dog who immediately went up and kissed her. It was maybe a couple of minutes later that the lady said she was already falling in love with this guy and shortly after that, she said he was absolutely the one!! She has had two Greyhounds before now and she has been naming them after mythical Greek characters so she decided that Brew was going to be named Perseus!

Gomer, Pam, Lou

Pam

Pam with her new mom, Kassandra

This lady from Bellingham came to find her new best friend. As soon as the first dog came into the Adoption Center, it was love at first sight for both the lady and the dog. This dog knew exactly what to do to make sure the lady knew they were meant to be together — snuggling, kissing, leaning etc. This probably would have been one of the shortest appointments we have had except that the lady’s friend suggested it would be a good idea if she at least saw one other dog. We did show her another but it was extremely obvious that she only had eyes for Pam!!

Lou

Lou (right) with her new & old family… Mikala, David & her real mother (Rosie, fka Rosa)

All of our adoptions are special, but this is one is just a little more special! It all started in South Korea when a mother was found with her puppy. The mother is one of those special souls that could weather almost anything, including her extremely active 1 year old pup. After watching them at the kennel, we all thought she looked like she was ready to be on her own so we let her be adopted by a couple. But, as happy as she was in her new home, something just seemed to be missing for her and, thankfully, this couple was very tuned into her & realized she needed a buddy and they brought her to the kennel to meet a few dogs. When she came to the kennel, we had a little surprise for her — we had her puppy waiting in the lobby and the reaction of the two dogs when they saw each other was one of those special moments that we will never forget!!! It was so obvious that they needed to be together and, again thankfully, the couple realized immediately what they needed to do. Lou just had to be part of their family and reunited with her mother Rosie (fka Rosa)!!!!

Inez

Inez (right) with her new dads & fur brother … Kelly, Rob & Rocky

These men lost their little girl Olive very quickly — she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and in less than a week she was gone. Not only were the men missing her terribly but her fur brother, Rocky, was also sad & lonely and also without direction (Olive had been the leader). They knew just what to do so they came to find a new sister who would be able to keep Rocky in line. It didn’t take long for them to decide that they had found the perfect little lady — our petite white/brindle girl named Inez!

May

May (nka Mabel, May for short) with her new mom & fur brother … Alexis & Sioc (pronounced Shook)

This lady has been volunteering at the kennel for quite a while scoping out potential companions for her one & a half year old Irish Wolfhound, Sioc (pronounced Shook). As you may know, Irish Wolfhounds are pretty huge dogs and this guy made all of our dogs look like toy dogs!! We were really wondering if our dogs would be okay with him or be afraid of him because of his size. Some were intimidated by him, but, of course we found a match. As you may have guessed, the dog that did the best with him was our tiny little spunky fawn girl, May (nka Mabel, May for short)!!

Heath

Heath, nka Hermès, with his new mom, Irina

When someone gets a Greyhound as their first dog, they are really taking on quite a project!! But that doesn’t seem to slow these people down and this lady is no exception. She was looking for a dog to be her couch buddy and walking/jogging buddy and she found him!! This dog was a touch reserved at first, but it didn’t take him long to take a liking to her and start showing her the famous Greyhound leaning trait. When she was looking at dogs outside, she rang the door bell almost immediately to come back in and we thought she had decided this dog was not the one she wanted. However, we were wrong — in fact, she had decided almost instantly that Heath, nka Hermès, was the boy for her!

Fancy

Fancy (nka Jasmine) with her new family … Steven, Jessica and Waffle

Since it is taking a while to get all the dogs spayed and neutered, many of our adopters have had to wait a while from the time they chose their dog to the time when they could take it home. This couple was one of those. A couple of weeks ago they brought their Pomeranian mix, Waffle, to the kennel to meet the dogs and help them narrow the list of possible dogs down. He definitely did his job well. Then it was up to the couple who had decided that this time it was the husband’s turn to pick the dog. They saw a few dogs, and before they even had a chance to take the dogs outside, the wife had a favorite. She was subtle and carefully allowed her husband to make the choice (or to think he made the choice)!! They actually both picked a dog who also happened to be a kennel favorite — Fancy (nka Jasmine).

Jade

Jade with his new family … Christine, Danica, Joe & Helena

This family was looking for their first dog as a family. In preparation, they came to the kennel a couple of weeks ago so that the kids could get to meet some Greyhounds and see what they were like before the family adopted one. It didn’t take them long to fall for the dogs and there were two in particular that caught their attention. They were going to go on vacation so they weren’t ready to commit to a dog at that time, but as soon as they returned, they got on the phone and let me know that the boy that won their hearts was Jade!!

Lisa

Lisa (nka Kate) with her new family … Keith (holding Chica), Callie & Lauri (holding Dee)

A family came to help their 15 year old daughter pick out her first dog. The family already has a dachshund mix named Dee & an Italian Greyhound mix named Chica that came to “help” the daughter in her selection process. Dee and Chica did a greyt job of screening the potential adoptees and then the daughter had to do the hard work and choose one. Of course, her parents had to sign off on her choice, but luckily, they all fell for the same one — Lisa who is now known as Kate.

Donna

Donna with her new dad, Nick

A man came to get his first dog. He had lived with a Greyhound when he lived back in Ann Arbor, Michigan and he knew a Grey would be a perfect fit for him. As we showed him the dogs, I think he fell for each one of them but there was one little fawn girl that came out into the Adoption Center and immediately put her head in his lap! She did such a good job of plastering herself to him that I don’t think he could have chosen another dog even if he wanted to. Donna needs to come back and tutor the other dogs on how to get adopted!!

Gia

Gia with her new parents, Kim and Steve

This couple had a Greyhound from GPI that just happened to be named Moira! She passed away a few years ago and it has taken the couple this long to recover from the loss. But, they have realized how much they miss having a Greyhound in their lives and the time had come to adopt again. They were leaning towards adopting a girl when they got to the kennel but they also wanted to see some boys. They got to see a nice variety of dogs and after narrowing the field down & playing with a few of them in the yard they decided that Gia was the one for them!!

Pam, Minty, Twin, Diva

Pam

Pam, nka LuLu, with her new mom, Emily

The first lady had a bulldog that she lost in March and she was really ready for a new companion. She trained for the Iron Man race and has actually done two of the half races so she was looking for a dog that was ready to be couch potato (just as she was) but also was up for some nice walks. The dog that she was drawn to was an excellent racer and she is ready for a nice couch and some serious spoiling. We think that they sound like two peas in a pod and the lady found a perfect balance of energy & laziness in Pam.

Minty

Minty, nka Piper, with her new mom & buddy … Lisa & Otis

Next came a couple who lost their Greyhound to a liver disease that came on quickly and took their dog within 2 days. Even though they were reeling from the whole experience, they knew they needed to give their love to another Greyhound and they immediately called us to come find a dog. The dog needed to get along with a cat and a Chihuahua mix which is no small request! But, we found a darling little black girl – Minty, nka Piper, who was all ready to soak up all the loving this couple has to give!!

Twin

Twin with his new parents, Michael & Madison

Things seem to be picking up again!! The first couple just moved here from Colorado and, now that they have settled in, they realized it was time to expand their family (especially since they left their family behind and the COVID 19 stuff has made it kind of hard to meet many people). We showed them a variety of boys and girls and they narrowed it down to one of each that they wanted to spend time with in the yard. The second dog never even got a chance to spend time in the yard — the first one was a slam dunk and nobody was surprised that they adopted one of the kennel favorites — that gorgeous (white/brindle), sweet boy Twin!!

Diva

Diva (right) with her new family … Dylan, Halen, Jenn, Gary & Banksy (fka Sabbath)

The next family has been watching our website for a while and they have been keeping an eye on one of our sweet brood moms. They wanted to introduce her to their current Greyhound, Banksy (fka Sabbath), to see is they would get along. The family fell for our dog immediately and, after a while, Banksy realized it might be fun to have a buddy and the two dogs were getting along greyt. The family was pretty much sold on the adoption but one of them thought they should think about it a little while. Just as they were ready to leave, the one hold out changed his mind and was ready to roll. We asked him what changed and he said he looked at his wife’s face as they were walking out the door and realized that the time was exactly right to take Diva home!!! Funny how those things work out, isn’t it?
