Rebel: Valentine of the Month

January 31, 2025

Please contact Greyhound Pets, Inc. Woodinville ([email protected]) for more information about Rebel.

Rebel

Tag No: 7044
Registered Name: Diegos Rebel
Breed: Greyhound
Date of Birth:  December 1, 2021
Color: Black
Cat Trainable: No
Dog Friendly: See Comments
Kid Friendly: No
Weight:  77 lbs
Location: Woodinville, WA (Kennel)
Comments:  Rebel, a three-year-old black greyhound originally from Ireland, has a kind, relaxed, and sweet personality.

But Rebel is currently very depressed. He has lived in two homes since arriving in America, but finds himself back at GPI. We really want to get him into a long-term foster home, or adoptive home, as soon as possible.  According to the two families he has lived with, when Rebel first comes home he behaves more or less normally. But with a little time he discovers the home’s most comfortable places, such as sofas and human beds, which he then starts to claim as his own. He has also shown some resource guarding with food.

Rebel needs a savvy, dog-experienced person who understands dog body language and resource guarding, and can provide him with the appropriate physical surroundings. He should have his own comfortable bed in each room to which he will have access so he won’t need to share the human furniture. He should also be physically blocked from comfy-looking furniture lest he try to claim it as his own, and be crated overnight or when left alone to prevent furniture invasions. With regard to his food guarding, GPI’s trainer has devised a safe feeding routine which his person will need to learn and follow. His home should be adults-only.

Apart from the resource/space guarding issues, Rebel is a wonderful fellow with so much going for him. Talk about “tall, dark, and handsome”, this guy is slender and lanky, even by greyhound standards! He has the typical, simultaneously serene-yet-goofy greyhound personality.  While Rebel doesn't seem to be big on playing with other dogs, he does enjoy canine companionship and having a turnout friend at GPI.  He has even been a buddy/mentor for some of GPI's shy dogs, bravely showing these scaredy-dogs that people, doors, and outdoors are all good, safe things.  But while he may be both compatible with and a good companion to a shy or calm dog, actually living with another dog could be problematic due to his guarding issues. He cannot live with cats or other small animals.

As long as his handler is alert for possible resource and space issues, Rebel is a wonderful public companion who is very friendly and likes affection and attention. On leash he is happy to keep pace with you or chill as you catch up with a neighbor on a walk. He hops right in and out of big and small cars and is a calm passenger.

Rebel would love to have a sponsor while he's in GPI's care.  If interested, see: https://greyhoundpetsinc.org/support/sponsor-a-dog/

Orla: January Dog of the Month

January 1, 2025

Please contact Greyhound Pets, Inc. Woodinville ([email protected]) for more information about Orla.

Orla

Tag No: 7025
Registered Name: Toras Bog
Breed: Greyhound
Date of Birth:  April 2, 2020
Color: Brindle
Cat Trainable:  No
Dog Friendly: See comments
Kid Friendly: No
Weight:  Approx. 60 pounds
Location: Woodinville, WA (Kennel)
Comments: Orla is a lovely Irish greyhound who will make a wonderful pet for the right person or family.  Blessed with a very pretty face with big brown eyes and a thick, soft, brindle-patterned coat, Orla is a 60 pound head-turner.  Orla is sweet with people, and likes petting and scritches, but she isn’t really the cuddly type.  She can be a bit standoffish at first when she meets someone new, but with a little time she warms right up and loves both to romp and lounge around with her human friends. She wants  to please her people, takes treats gently, and loves to play.

We don’t know much about Orla’s life back in Ireland before she came to GPI, besides the fact she broke her leg at some point. This injury appears to have healed very well and does not seem to have had any lasting effect.

She is good on leashed walks and doesn’t show on-leash reactivity to other large dogs. Orla would make a great partner for brisk walks as she isn’t one to dawdle or sniff everything on walks - this girl likes to walk fast, lead the way, and keep an eye out for interesting sights! She does well in the car, and loves to look out the car window. She will enter a crate in exchange for a treat.

Orla would thrive as an only pet in a home with a securely fenced yard in which she could amuse herself (and you!) with her impressive zoomie skills and her funny, playful nature. She seems more or less indifferent to larger dogs and uninterested in making canine friends.  Orla has a strong prey drive meaning she cannot be placed in a home with smaller animals such as cats and little dogs. Orla is just not suited for life in a densely populated situation such as an apartment/condo/townhome, nor in a busy urban area where she would encounter smaller animals which trigger her prey drive. Even on leash she is not safe in close proximity to little animals.  Orla’s prey drive also manifests in a rather intense interest in stuffed toys, especially the squeaky ones. She loves stuffies so much that she zealously guards and eventually destroys them. Orla thinks it’s fun to snatch things which remind her of toys, so her adopters must be willing to put away or block tempting items (e.g., shoes, coats, purses, toys, pillows) while she learns what is and isn't hers.

The good news is GPI’s staff and volunteers are now able to distract Orla during a toy guarding event easily by trading toys for treats or other toys. Orla’s trainers are now working to teach her to disengage from toys without bribing her with treats or other toys. This bribe-free technique does take some patience and may well put some wear and tear on the toy in question! Orla’s new family will need to understand and be willing to work on her issues with toys. Because of her prey drive and toy guarding Orla should live in an adults-only home.

Darcy: December Dog of the Month

December 16, 2024

Please contact Greyhound Pets, Inc. Woodinville ([email protected]) for more information about Darcy.

Darcy

Tag No: 7058
Registered Name: None
Breed: Whippet Mix
Date of Birth: Approximately December 16, 2019
Color: Red
Cat Trainable: Unknown
Dog Friendly: Would do best as an only dog
Kid Friendly: Not Recommended
Weight: 40 lbs
Location: Woodinville, WA (Kennel)
Comments: Darcy is oh so sweet once she is comfortable, but it takes her some time to trust and adjust. She has made amazing progress with the help of her trainers!!! Darcy came to us from South Korea off a dog meat farm and still bears some of the scars from her previous life. Once she trusts you, she is playful and loves to run - she just makes us smile! She is eager to please and learn. She will need a home with a securely fenced yard and one that has some patience to continue to work with her and continue her training.

Darcy would love another sponsor while she waits for her forever home. If this sounds like something you'd like to do, see this link for more info. https://greyhoundpetsinc.org/support/sponsor-a-dog/

Billy: December Dog of the Month

November 30, 2024

12/12/24:  It is with much sadness we need to report that Billy passed away this morning unexpectedly.  It was determined that he had a very large tumor that caused his passing.  Run free sweet Billy - you will be missed by many.

Billy

Tag No: 6963
Registered Name: None
Breed: Greyhound
Date of Birth:  July 2019
Color: Red
Cat Trainable: No
Dog Friendly: Ok with greyhounds
Kid Friendly: No
Weight:  75 lbs
Location: Woodinville, WA (Kennel)
Comments:  Billy is a 5-year-old male fawn greyhound who will be a wonderful pet for the right person or family. Billy is friendly, upbeat, and very social-he even greets his best human friends with a goofy, toothy grin! People who know him best say that in addition to a lovely personality, Billy’s best traits are his intelligence and desire to please his person. He has been well trained, and currently knows “sit”, “lay down”, and even how to bow his head! Billy loves puzzle games and his training sessions, and would delight in learning more fun stuff from his new person.

Originally from South Korea, Billy has lived in a home before but was returned. Billy could be an
only pet, or possibly live with other larger, calm dogs. Billy cannot live with cats, small dogs, or other little animals.

Billy is not suited for life in a densely populated situation such as an apartment/condo/townhome, or in a busy urban area. Billy had a very scary encounter in an urban environment with two big aggressive dogs who seemed to come out of nowhere. He still feels he needs to be on guard when it comes to unknown dogs, and his new owner will need to help Billy regain his confidence by avoiding chance encounters with dogs he doesn’t know. That said, Billy continues to love walks and has lovely leash manners. The right home would have a fenced yard located in a suburban or rural area where Billy and you can walk in relatively quiet places without close dog encounters of the scary kind!

Billy is loving, sweet, and will lean affectionately on his friends but he is not a “hugger.” Because he has a sensitive neck Billy would be best in an adult-only home.
