Digger

Digger, nka Ricco, with his new mom, Anne

A woman from Abbotsford BC lost her Weimaraner earlier this year and had decided that it was time for her to adopt a Greyhound. She actually had quite a few fun dogs to choose from and it wasn’t an easy choice, but she fell for a goofy boy who almost immediately became a kennel favorite when he arrived — Digger, nka Ricco!

Kara

Kara with her new parents … Daaren & Erin

We did some rough calculations and we figured out that about one third of the dogs that have been adopted in the last two months have headed to Canada and now, we’ve added two more dogs to that total!!

This family is from Calgary and they recently lost their sweet girl, Mildred. While the main purpose of their trip to Seattle was to find their next Greyhound, they also decided to expand the trip to include visits with friends and even a concert at Chateau Ste Michelle. Of course, the highlight of their trip was when they met a beautiful little blue brindle girl that won their hearts — Kara!

Sally

Sally, nka Esprit, with her new mom, Michelle

The next dog has already logged a lot of travel time since she came to us from Dubai, so we were happy she only had a short trip from the kennel to her new home in Port Townsend. Her new mom lives on a beach and can take her dog to work with her … I’d say Sally, now known as Esprit (Spri for short), couldn’t have picked a better home for herself!

Echo

Echo, nka Evee, with her new mom, Megan

Once again, one of our volunteers took advantage of her turnout time by getting to know the dogs as well as she could. When she came to look at dogs to adopt, she had one particular boy in mind, but, wisely, wanted to see others. It’s a good thing she did keep going because we brought out a pretty, fawn girl that won this lady’s heart immediately. She did have to think things through because the boy she was interested in was also a pretty special guy, but, when all was said and done, Echo, nka Evee, was headed off to her new home.

Angel

Angel (right) with her extended family … Patty, Jose, Sammi (Angel’s new mom), Whitney and Kiko (fka Stubby)

Unfortunately for the people in Oregon, their Greyhound agency has been unable to get dogs and there is a long waiting list for a Greyhound. However, this has been lucky for our hounds because a lot of people have been making the trip to Woodinville to get their Greyhounds. The lady who adopted Stubby (nka Kiko) about a year and a half ago has been dying to adopt another hound, but wanted to retire first so she had lots of time to spend with her hounds. Well, she retired last Friday and made a beeline to the kennel to find a companion for Stubby. She fell in love with all the ones we showed her but the little girl that left for Portland won the lady over with her sweet demeanor and her beautiful face with the white cross on it (I think she looks like she just came from church on Ash Wednesday). Stubby looks so cute with his new sister, Angel!!

Azadeh

Azadeh (left) with her new family … Steve, Annette & Dexter (fka Bong)

The next adoption was to a couple who recently adopted one of our handsome, fawn boys — Bong, who is now called Dexter. The couple have been coming to the Brightwater walk for quite awhile and took the opportunity to get to know one of our shy little girls better on those walks. The fun thing is that they were able to see the potential in this sweet girl and wanted to see her blossom which she has started to do rather quickly with the attention she has gotten from the couple and some of the patient volunteers who helped her learn that the world isn’t nearly as scary as it seems. We are so happy for Azadeh and her new family!!

Alice

Alice, nka Cherry, with her new family … Jake & Alison

If you are a Greyhound who happens to like cats, you are very popular and in very short supply.! Hence, the families may not have a lot of dogs to choose from but they get to meet some real sweetie pies (I say that about all of the dogs ;-))! Our latest adopters met two cute little girls and a gentle boy and when we asked if they wanted to narrow the list before they went out to play in the yard, surprisingly, they already had it down to one dog — Alice who is now known as Cherry!!

Trigger

Trigger, nka Max, with his new parents … Steve & Kristen

This couple will be getting married in the near future and they decided they were ready to make an addition to their family before the marriage. When we starting to look at the dogs, they made sure that we understood that they would only be taking a dog today if they felt a really strong connection and decided that was absolutely the dog for them. We listened carefully and then watched as they fell in love immediately with the dog they saw first — Trigger who is now known as Max.

Habibi

Habibi with his new family … Maddie, Thomas & Sonia

This adoption was to a couple and their roommate who just graduated from college in Montreal and moved back to Seattle a month ago. It didn’t take them long to decide that they needed a dog in their lives and they were ready to adopt right away — in fact, they had their home visit the night before and less than 24 hours later, they headed home with their new addition. They only looked at two dogs and it was immediately obvious that one of them won their hearts in a very short time. They took the dog outside for a while and it was so much fun to see this dog play with the young roommates — they were all having such a wonderful time and we were having a ball watching them. When they came in to tell us they were going to take this dog home, it was kind of bittersweet because this dog had been through a lot and when he came to use a few weeks ago, he almost instantly became a kennel favorite. This boy came from the UAE and spent three years in a shelter before he came to us. None of us can understand why he wasn’t adopted there, but we all knew Habibi would find a wonderful home in the US and that happened yesterday!!!

Pooch

Pooch with his new dad, Zach

If you are thinking of adopting, doing turnout is always a good way to preview the dogs before your appointment. The man who adopted this dog had done just that and he came with a list of dogs that he wanted to get to know better and, of course, after we listened to him describe his lifestyle, we added a couple of dogs that just became available to his list. Usually, after the adopter meets the dogs for the first time, they narrow the list down a bit and then spend some time outside with a few dogs. This man had trouble narrowing the list down so he spent extra time with almost all the dogs. Thankfully, one of the dogs made wonderful use of his time in the yard (he actually made very good use of his first visit with the man, it just took a little time for the man to realize it!) so Pooch was on his way home with his new dad!!

Sage

Sage, nka Jasper, with her new parents, Kyle & Liz

Last week, this couple came to the kennel booth to preview the dogs because they were scheduled for a home visit in a couple of days and they knew they would be getting their dog soon. Thereafter. While they were on their tour, one particular dog caught their eye and after spending time with her outside, they decided she was the one they wanted. The dog they chose is a completely different dog than the one that arrived around 6 months ago because of all the work and time that the employees and volunteers have spent teaching her manners. You should have seen her standing quietly in the adoption center during the whole process!! On behalf of Sage, nka Jasper, all I can do is say thank you to those people … you made it possible for this to happen!!

McKinley

McKinley with his new mom, Anna

It is so much fun to see someone who has wanted a dog for most of their life walk out of the door with their new friend and that’s what happened today! This lady just recently moved here from Indiana and now that she is free from other restrictions, she couldn’t wait to get her dog. While we were showing dogs the first time, one of them went over to her to give kisses and while he was doing that she was giggling like a little girl. We were pretty sure that McKinley was obvious enough about his choice that she would take him home and, of course, she did!!

Gail, Junior, White, Whiskey

Gail

Gail with her new parents, Shiona & Dean

This is almost getting ridiculous (and we LOVE it) … another dog just headed to Canada!! The couple that adopted this dog came down more than a week before to meet the dogs and they met a sweet little, black girl that won their hearts. Although it is so hard to do, the couple needed to leave her with us because she still needed to be spayed. Bless their hearts, they patiently waited over a week, but today she was ready to go home and Gail, nka Tempest, headed north to her new home.

Junior

Junior with his new mom, Judy

The next lady has been through a lot in the last few months, she lost her dog and has had some health problems of her own, so she was chomping at the bit to get her new furry friend. We introduced her to a variety of dogs and while she thought she wanted a little black female, she ended up taking a big, black and white boy home. This boy was immediately “tuned in” to this woman and it was interesting to see how they both seemed to understand they were meant to be together — that Junior is a very smart, loving boy!!

White

White, nka Juno, with her new mom & dad, Megann and Cameron

It’s hard to imagine what the next step is after you get married and have a honeymoon in Europe but this couple knew exactly what to do … get a Greyhound!! And, they didn’t waste any time between the honeymoon and getting the dog. BTW, they also have a cat and, luckily, they got to meet and choose between a few wonderful dogs. As we probably should have expected, they were each leaning towards a different dog. That’s when things got interesting … we have seen all kinds of negotiations in our adoption center, but, I have to admit it was kind of fun to watch the newlyweds negotiate with each other and we were guessing who would get the dog of their choice. Suffice it to say “happy wife, happy life” was the final thought of the day and that is how White, nka Juno, found herself on her way to her new home. –

Whiskey

Whiskey (right) with his new family … RJ, Bruce and Shane.

One of our former residents, a FIG – Flying Irish Greyhounds named Shane, was in need of a playmate so his dads brought him in to pick his new friend. The problem was that Shane is such a sweetheart and so easy going that he got along with all the dogs he met. That meant his dads had to do the hard work and make the final decision. They somehow reduced their list to two dogs and after spending time in the yard, taking a walk and much deliberation, they decided that the best fit for all of them was Whiskey!!

Alif, Bandit, Tank, Revie, Abe, Nicole

Alif

The moment Alif chose his new mom, Holly

This adoption actually began a couple of weeks ago when a lady came to visit just to get to know our dogs. We had just gotten 3 dogs from Dubai who needed to go out so the lady got to “unofficially” meet them. While we were out in the yard, something happened that I haven’t seen before and it was about the sweetest thing I have seen in a very long time. The lady was sitting on the concrete and one of the dogs walked over and, with no encouragement, curled up in her lap. It was pretty obvious that he had chosen her and now, 2 very long weeks later, that dog is out of quarantine and he was able to go to Portland with his new mom. We love it when we get to be a part of scenes like this and are thrilled for Alif!!

Bandit

Bandit (left), nka Charlie with his new family … Dorothy and Lizzie

The next adoption came about because the woman had lost a dog that she only had for a short time (it’s always too short, isn’t it?) and the remaining greyhound in the home was having a hard time without her sister (and, truth be told, so was the mother). This lady came looking for a female to adopt, but, her current female, Lizzie, didn’t seem particularly interested in any of the females we showed her. So, we decided to try a couple of males and, of course, the very last dog we showed them connected almost immediately with both the mom and the dog — it was Bandit who is now known as Charlie!

Tank

Tank with his new parents … Petko & Li

It seems like every time I turn around another one of our dogs is headed north of the border and it happened again today. A couple came looking for a relatively mellow dog to join their family. The truth is that we don’t have an over abundance of mellow dogs that are old enough to live in an apartment, but we do have a few and any one of those would have been a good fit for this couple. After they had a chance to meet the dogs, the couple agreed with us and that made their decision very difficult, especially since each of the people started out “leaning toward” different dogs. But, after some deliberation and negotiation, they were able to agree that Tank was the one!

Revie

Revie (left) with his new family … Bill & Max

The next adoption was to a man in a similar situation. He took a totally different approach to finding his next family member — he did turnout every day for the last week so that he had an opportunity to meet all the dogs and do some “pre-screening”. I think he would have introduced the whole kennel to his current boy if we hadn’t helped him narrow his list down a little. He was counting on Max, his current grey, to make the choice for him, but Max got along with every dog so he wasn’t a lot of help. In the end, the dad had to make the choice and he picked a “lulu” — a wonderful, young, ACTIVE boy named Revie!

Abe

Abe, nka Goose, with his new parents … Danny & Cait

We have definitely had a run on black dogs lately (of course that’s probably because we have a lot of black dogs!) and that continued today. A couple that lives near Green Lake have been planning for their furry addition for a very long time and they decided they were ready to proceed now. They had been checking the website and had found a couple of dogs that interested them, but they didn’t tell us who those dogs were. I guess they wanted to see what we would come up with so they gave us a test! I think we passed because after we showed them dogs and they made their selection, they told us that Abe, nka Goose, was the dog they had fallen in love with online!!

Nicole

Nicole, nka Tuesday, with her new family … Finn, Darla, Charlie & Dave

A family made a long drive from Alberta Canada to find a new addition to their family since they recently lost their greyhound in March. Apparently, their girl, Juniper, was a pretty big girl (about 75 pounds) so they decided that this time they would like a more petite girl who was younger than 3. We showed them the smallest girls we had and also brought out a couple of our young boys for them to meet. And, as often happens, the first dog they met was the one they fell in love with and the one they took home to Canada — Nicole, who is now known as Tuesday!!
