Flame

Flame with her new dads, Neil & David

Lately, we have had quite a few adopters that have had a lot of Greyhounds through the years and that trend continued with the men that recently came to the kennel. They have had 5 Greyhounds through the years and after the loss of their most recent Grey last November, they were missing that Greyhound energy in their home. They saw all the dogs we had that would get along with their two Ragdoll cats and each one, of course, had its own special “something”, but, it was impossible to resist the little black girl that came out bouncing across the room with her tale wagging. She had a way of making everyone feel happy and special and these men quickly realized that Flame had to be part of their family!

Chalk up one more Canadian Greyhound!!! Okay, it is time for us US folks to get rolling and adopt some Greyhounds!! At any rate, I can think of a lot of things that newlyweds have to take care of after their wedding, but for this couple, who were just married on Saturday, the one of the most important things was to adopt their new furry baby. They have been planning to get a Greyhound for many years and now that the wedding is over, the time for an adoption has come. We showed them 2 boys and 2 girls and, while all of them were on their best behavior, there was one dog that really had her “A” game going and, truthfully, we would have been surprised if the couple had picked any dog but Bonnie!

Cosmo

As many of you know, when you have decided you are a Greyhound person, you are a Greyhound person!! The ladies we just met are Greyhound people (they have been in the Greyhound family since 1995) —- I honestly lost count while they were naming their previous Greys, but I am pretty sure that the one they adopted was either number 7 or 8. Of course, the most important part of the whole adoption process is that the current dog, in this case, Miss Ivy who was formerly known as Wattzee, sign off on whatever dog was adopted. Luckily, Ivy is very mellow and she got along with everyone so it was up to the ladies to make the final choice. We were all pretty sure that they were going to pick one of our pretty little girls, but we were so wrong — happily, they picked our special boy, Cosmo!!!

Leny

Leny with his new dad, Simon

This Friday must have been men’s day and nobody told us – all the adopters and
adoptees were men! First up was a man from Bellingham who couldn’t wait to
get his first Greyhound. Although we didn’t have a lot of dogs that fit his
situation, the ones we had were all stars but he seemed to have little problem
narrowing the list down to 2. At that point, he had a real dilemma since he
couldn’t pick just one so he asked if he could think it over and get back to
us. It took him 2 days to make his decision and then he had to wait 4 more
days until he could come pick up his dog. So, after a sleepless night last
night, he finally got to take home his new Greyhound, Leny!!

Zakaria

Zakaria with his new dad, Cody

The second man moved here from the east coast a while back and since he once
had a Greyhound back there, he was ready for another one. He had come to the
last open house so he had a preview of the dogs that were available. He came
with his list in hand, but most of the dogs on his list had already found
their forever homes. You would think he might have been disappointed, but the
number one dog on his list was still available and, after meeting a wide
variety of dogs and spending quite a bit of time with that dog, he was still
number one!! So he now has a very handsome dog from Dubai named Zakaria!!

White

White with her new dad, Carrick

It is really fun to watch someone who knows what they want go ahead and make
it happen. Our most recent adopter was a young man who just returned from a
year in Japan and is on his way to Bellingham to finish his college education.
He has experience with small sight hounds and has always wanted a big dog and
had his sights (no pun intended) set on a Greyhound. When he came to the
kennel, he freely shared his plans for the next couple of years and he made
sure we knew the most important part of his plan was to get his first
Greyhound. Before he even came to the kennel, he had done his research and he
knew exactly which one he wanted! Luckily, he and the dog got along
beautifully when they met and he was able to fulfill his plans to adopt his
first Greyhound and he headed off to Bellingham with his new pal, White!!

Angel

Angel with her new family – Daryl, Sarah, (left to right) Ollie, Veggie and Angel

Some dogs have to go through a lot before they find their forever homes and this dog has definitely jumped a lot of hurdles to get to where she is now. In the approximately nine months we have had her, she has had multiple surgeries (I lost count), been to the vet umpteen million times and had her leg doctored daily. For the last couple of months, she has been in a “foster to adopt” home while she went through the last part of her recovery and, thankfully, she is now ready to be adopted. According to her foster parents, this little girl has set their house on its ear … she is curious about everything and gets into pretty much everything. Luckily, her foster parents have a good sense of humor and they know she is making up for all the time when she wasn’t allowed to do anything. The wonderful part of this whole story is that Angel walked out of the door to her new home using all four legs and barely limping — I know there were times along the way when we weren’t sure she would be able to do that.

Sky

Sky (right) with his new family … Jess, Kris & Nola.

When this particular dog arrived at the kennel from South Korea, nobody thought he would be there very long once he was cleared for adoption. We did have the pleasure of his company for a while since he was being treated for heart worm, and people who were interested in adopting started popping up immediately. We had all kinds of offers from people who wanted to sweeten the pot so that they could get to the top of the list, but we stood our ground — first come first serve! Today the lucky people at the top of the list and the lucky dog made things official and our first and only Whippet, Sky, is now a resident of Tukwila with a fur sister named Nola, a kitty and two happy parents!!

Dos

Dos with her new family … Henry, Andrea, Jeff and Marty

When you are working with a family that has a four year old and a chihuahua, you never know quite what to expect. We always start by telling the family that the process is going to be “trial and error” since we truly have no idea what dogs are going to be able to cope with that cast of characters. This time, we actually hit pay dirt on our first try — our pretty, red fawn came out to the adoption center and proceeded to pretty much ignore the little dog and enjoy being patted by the child. We went on to show one more dog and at that time the family decided they wanted to spend more time with the first dog. What a greyt idea that was — just spending some time in the yard with the dog confirmed their initial impression and they decided that Dos was the one for them!

Charlie and Tammy

Charlie (left) & Tammy with their new parents, Dorothy & Jeff

A couple from Kingston lost their sweet Lurcher, Luna, who we knew as Kira, a few months ago to cancer and they decided that they missed the patter of Greyhound feet in their home and it was time to adopt. Before they came to the kennel, we talked about some of the dogs that were available for adoption and when they got to the kennel, we showed them those plus a few more options. Two of the available dogs we discussed and showed were two special girls that needed to be rehomed because an illness in their original family meant that the family could no longer devote the time to the girls that they really needed. Since these girls have been together for a few years and have become very bonded, it was very important that they go to the same home. They have spent the last couple of months in a wonderful foster home, but it was time that they go to their forever home. We were very hopeful that the girls and the couple would be a good fit and, thankfully, both the couple and the girls realized they should be together!! So, Charlie and Tammy left for their new home in Kingston —- Rooooohoooo!!!

Digger

Digger, nka Ricco, with his new mom, Anne

A woman from Abbotsford BC lost her Weimaraner earlier this year and had decided that it was time for her to adopt a Greyhound. She actually had quite a few fun dogs to choose from and it wasn’t an easy choice, but she fell for a goofy boy who almost immediately became a kennel favorite when he arrived — Digger, nka Ricco!

Kara

Kara with her new parents … Daaren & Erin

We did some rough calculations and we figured out that about one third of the dogs that have been adopted in the last two months have headed to Canada and now, we’ve added two more dogs to that total!!

This family is from Calgary and they recently lost their sweet girl, Mildred. While the main purpose of their trip to Seattle was to find their next Greyhound, they also decided to expand the trip to include visits with friends and even a concert at Chateau Ste Michelle. Of course, the highlight of their trip was when they met a beautiful little blue brindle girl that won their hearts — Kara!

Sally

Sally, nka Esprit, with her new mom, Michelle

The next dog has already logged a lot of travel time since she came to us from Dubai, so we were happy she only had a short trip from the kennel to her new home in Port Townsend. Her new mom lives on a beach and can take her dog to work with her … I’d say Sally, now known as Esprit (Spri for short), couldn’t have picked a better home for herself!

Echo

Echo, nka Evee, with her new mom, Megan

Once again, one of our volunteers took advantage of her turnout time by getting to know the dogs as well as she could. When she came to look at dogs to adopt, she had one particular boy in mind, but, wisely, wanted to see others. It’s a good thing she did keep going because we brought out a pretty, fawn girl that won this lady’s heart immediately. She did have to think things through because the boy she was interested in was also a pretty special guy, but, when all was said and done, Echo, nka Evee, was headed off to her new home.

Angel

Angel (right) with her extended family … Patty, Jose, Sammi (Angel’s new mom), Whitney and Kiko (fka Stubby)

Unfortunately for the people in Oregon, their Greyhound agency has been unable to get dogs and there is a long waiting list for a Greyhound. However, this has been lucky for our hounds because a lot of people have been making the trip to Woodinville to get their Greyhounds. The lady who adopted Stubby (nka Kiko) about a year and a half ago has been dying to adopt another hound, but wanted to retire first so she had lots of time to spend with her hounds. Well, she retired last Friday and made a beeline to the kennel to find a companion for Stubby. She fell in love with all the ones we showed her but the little girl that left for Portland won the lady over with her sweet demeanor and her beautiful face with the white cross on it (I think she looks like she just came from church on Ash Wednesday). Stubby looks so cute with his new sister, Angel!!

Azadeh

Azadeh (left) with her new family … Steve, Annette & Dexter (fka Bong)

The next adoption was to a couple who recently adopted one of our handsome, fawn boys — Bong, who is now called Dexter. The couple have been coming to the Brightwater walk for quite awhile and took the opportunity to get to know one of our shy little girls better on those walks. The fun thing is that they were able to see the potential in this sweet girl and wanted to see her blossom which she has started to do rather quickly with the attention she has gotten from the couple and some of the patient volunteers who helped her learn that the world isn’t nearly as scary as it seems. We are so happy for Azadeh and her new family!!

Alice

Alice, nka Cherry, with her new family … Jake & Alison

If you are a Greyhound who happens to like cats, you are very popular and in very short supply.! Hence, the families may not have a lot of dogs to choose from but they get to meet some real sweetie pies (I say that about all of the dogs ;-))! Our latest adopters met two cute little girls and a gentle boy and when we asked if they wanted to narrow the list before they went out to play in the yard, surprisingly, they already had it down to one dog — Alice who is now known as Cherry!!

Trigger

Trigger, nka Max, with his new parents … Steve & Kristen

This couple will be getting married in the near future and they decided they were ready to make an addition to their family before the marriage. When we starting to look at the dogs, they made sure that we understood that they would only be taking a dog today if they felt a really strong connection and decided that was absolutely the dog for them. We listened carefully and then watched as they fell in love immediately with the dog they saw first — Trigger who is now known as Max.
