Adoption Tails

Spicy, Chance, Small, Wyatt, Blake, Saida

May 20, 2020

Thanks to our hard-working,  caring volunteers, and patient approved adopters, many dogs have been adopted recently.  Catch up today with Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling’s stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Spicy

Spicy, nka Winnie, with her new mom & dad — Ellie & Eric

This couple came in thinking that a girl would be the best fit for them because the wife had only had small dogs. Since the husband had grown up with a Great Pyrenee, he was ready for just about anything. So, we showed them a couple of our sweet little girls and also snuck in a couple of our more mild mannered boys and, truth be told, their short list at the end actually included one of our “boy cow dogs”. But, I have to say that the competition was stiff and when the dust settled, our sweet little Spicy, who is now known as Winnie, was the one heading to her new home.

Chance and Small

Chance (left) & Small with their new family … Tim, Roz & Dash

This couple has an IG named Dash who is getting on in years. Dash has lived with 3 Greyhounds and, after losing his last buddy in October, he was ready for a new companion. He has always had brothers so we started out thinking that he would do best with another boy and he did do well with one of them. But, the other boys we brought out were way too interested in Dash so we thought we should head in a different direction. When we brought out one of our girls, Dash was thoroughly enthralled with her!! He sniffed her all over and then gave her a little kiss on her cheek — I think all of us thought that was one of the cutest things we had seen. There was only one problem and that was that they also fell in love with one of our boys. There was obviously only one solution — they decided to adopt both Chance & Small and little Dash was very happy with the new additions to his family!!

Wyatt

Wyatt with his new family … Brad, Katie & Vegas

This couple has a German Shepherd/Border Collie mix (named Vegas) that is about 13 years old. In her hay day, I’m sure she could have worn out any one of our dogs pretty quickly and she still has more energy than you might think so we were looking for a dog that had not only got along with smaller dogs, but also wanted to play. Almost all of the dogs that we showed the couple got along with Vegas so the humans actually had to make the decision. Interestingly, both of the dogs that they narrowed it to have been around a while and had kind of “flown under the radar” but the time had come for one of them to step forward and shine and, that’s exactly what Wyatt did!!

Blake

Blake (right) with his new family … Brenna, Jerry & Ziggy

Ziggy, one of our previous residents who came to us from Flying Irish Greyhounds in Ireland, recently lost his fur brother and his family felt the time was right for a new addition since they have about 3 months until the birth of their new baby. Ziggy was in charge of selecting his new companion (with some guidance from his parents) and he did an excellent job. His dad really wanted to see our black and white dogs and he saw every one of them — I truly had no idea how many we had, but, trust me, it is a lot!! Ziggy gave them all the once over and he and his dad agreed that Blake would be the best addition to the family!!

Saida

Saida with her new mom, Brittany

This particular dog has single handedly generated a lot of
interest in the dogs at GPI and many have been adopted because of her. For some reason, she didn’t benefit from that exposure until now. This lady contacted us about this girl and she actually came in, met her & fell in love with her. It was so much fun watching them connect & there is no doubt that Saida is going to be spoiled rotten — just as she should be!!

Fred

Fred with his new parents … Ryan & Jamie

Our day is always interesting when there is a small dog involved and today was no exception. This small dog is a Havanese named Murphy and he did his job perfectly. The couple had a few dogs that they wanted to look at, and, after they met the first one, I’m not sure we even needed to go on. That dog did everything but put himself in the car — he snuggled, leaned, kissed — I’m not sure he could have been more obvious!! Thankfully, this couple was totally tuned in and they knew pretty quickly Fred would be a wonderful fit for them!

Settia

Settia, nka Tipper, with her new parents … Leslie & Nic

This couple has kind of a fun background story … they dated in high school, then each married someone else and had families and then about 7 years ago got reconnected through Facebook and have been married for 5 years. The wife has always had rescue animals of all types of species and, after losing their coonhound mix a short while ago, they were ready for another. They came to meet one specific dog, but while they were there, they thought they should see some other dogs. It turned out to be just one more dog because when that one came out, they both fell for her quickly. What’s not to like … this beautiful, brindle girl from South Korea has “bunny” fur and such a happy demeanor. They couldn’t wait to take Settia home even though they knew that she was going to keep them on their toes!! –

Tamara

Tamara with her new mom, Katy

The first lady we met today came in to meet one particular dog and, since this was a girl who had been with us for a while, we were all hoping that the two would get along. Thankfully, they seemed to hit it off well and this girl, who came to us from Dubai, even gave a little performance to seal the deal — she sat & caught treats in the air!! Who could resist that??? No one and especially not this lady so she just had to take Tamara home!!

Memphis

Memphis with his new family … John, Thomas, Grace, Bianca & Spenser

Next a family of five came to find their new furry buddy. Often when there are this many people involved, it can be difficult for them to come to a decision. But, this family saw a few very different dogs and they still seemed to agree on the same one. Of course, that dog stacked the deck in his favor — he came out to meet them and immediately went up to each family member, did a little leaning & kissing and then topped it off showing his ball playing skills. None of the other dogs could compete!! So, Memphis has found a wonderful new home!!!

Oden & Oscar

Oden (left) & Oscar with their new parents … David & Shawna

This adoption was FUN!!! A couple came to meet some specific dogs and, the truth is, I’m pretty sure they knew they were going home with those dogs before they even got to the kennel!! But, despite the fact that they were shoe ins, these guys came out and put on the performance of their lives. They played and then came over to get some loving and then repeated the whole process. They were absolutely adorable and totally irresistible! Thank heavens their new parents didn’t waste much time before they told us that they were taking our sweet brothers from Dubai, Oscar & Oden, to their new home!!!!

Charley

Charley with his new parents … Amelia & Matt

A couple came looking for the first dog of their married life. They saw quite a variety of dogs from shy to extremely outgoing so they definitely had some options to consider. At first, they were nervous that they wouldn’t be able to make up their minds because they loved all the dogs they saw, but, as usually happens, it became evident to them that one dog was meant to be theirs. They chose our sweet, brindle boy, Charley, who is a Lurcher from the American Lurcher Project in Ohio.

Yu, Manny, Adora, Phoebe, Sansa, Harley

May 12, 2020

Thanks to our hard-working,  caring volunteers, and patient approved adopters, many dogs have been adopted recently.  Catch up today with Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling’s stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Yu

Yu with her new family … Megan, Keith & Brady

First came a couple with a really cute little dachshund mix named Brady who was in search of a new buddy. This little guy got along with everyone!!! Since the couple also needed a dog that would get along with cats, there were not a lot of dogs for them to see, but the ones they saw did a wonderful job of showing off their stuff. Of course, they all had their pros and cons, but when you meet a dog that is very affectionate and looks at you with big brown eyes, there really was no surprise that the beautiful little fawn girl named Yu totally won their hearts.

Manny

Manny with his new parents, Nick & Julia

Everybody has been chomping at the bit to get their hands on their very own Greyhound and it seems that the longer they have had to wait, the more excited to get. This couple has been checking in with me regularly and they couldn’t get to the kennel fast enough when I let them know we were ready to proceed. After seeing a couple of girls and a couple of boys, they narrowed it down to the two boys who happened to look almost exactly alike — black & white. It wasn’t long after they said they would never be able to make a decision that they walked in and said they were adopting our sweet, affectionate Manny!

Adora

Adora with her new parents, Jon & Carmen

This couple has been so excited about getting their new family member so it was really fun to let them know that we were able to do adoptions. They have 2 cats so their selection of dogs was quite limited to begin with and then they let us know they were only interested in girls so that made the small list even shorter! However, even when we only have a few dogs that fit a specific situation, the potential adopters still have such wonderful dogs to choose from. The girls they met were very different — one was a purebred and the other wasn’t — one was very skittish and the other was very outgoing. They could easily have been happy with either one, but the one they ended up taking home was the sweet, outgoing girl who came to us from Dubai. She was also a kennel favorite (and my absolute favorite!!!), Adora!!!

Phoebe

Phoebe with her new dads, Kevin and Stephen

These men came to the kennel expecting to go home with one of our Saluki mixes and, truthfully, that little girl gave a wonderful performance (she talked & pranced around), but then they thought they should meet a few of our purebreds. They very quickly connected with two of our ex-racing girls and they had a hard time making a final decision. But, as they thought it through, they realized that the dog that fit their activity level and general lifestyle the best and , BTW, completely won their hearts was our beautiful, brindle girl, Phoebe!!

Sansa

Sansa (nka Heela) with her new parents, Christiane & Werner

Here’s another instance that shows the benefits of volunteering. While doing turnout over the past couple of months, the wife fell in love with one of our girls. The next step for her was to convince her husband that the time was right to get another dog since they had recently lost their beloved Afghan. I think the “happy wife/happy life” played a part here, but the result was that they decided to make this girl part of their family. Before I tell you who they adopted, I want to tell you her new name and the story behind the name straight from her new parents. They named her “HEELA – which means hope … We’re always looking for names with a meaning and in Corona times hope is what you need and also as a retired dog they hope to find a new home.“ This name is perfect for their beautiful black brindle girl who was formerly known as Sansa.

Harley

Harley, fka Charley and nka Charley, with his new family … Andrew, Amber & Joni

This dog’s former owner was betting that he was going to be one heck of a racer which is why he paid a lot of money to get him. Sometimes things don’t work out the way you hope and, in this case, the dog never even got to the “big leagues” because he broke his leg during his training. It was a pretty serious break and required surgery so his racing career was over before it started. He has completed most of his rehab work and has just been given the “go ahead” to be adopted and the first couple that met him realized immediately what a gem he was (it was a real plus that he got along very well with their small terrier mix named Joni). So, the whole family agreed that Harley was absolutely the new family member they had been looking for. BTW, he was originally known as Charley — we changed his name because we already had a Charley — and the couple decided that they would change his name back to Charley!!

Brad

Brad with his new family … Daniel, Doni & Cede (pronounced Sadie)

A few months ago, this couple brought their roughly 10 year old dog (Cede,
pronounced Sadie) to meet our dogs. At that time, it was very hard to get a
read on what would and wouldn’t work because Cede was very protective of the
wife and she was so uncomfortable wearing a muzzle. After they left us, they
had Cede practice wearing a muzzle and socialized her more so, this time was a
whole different experience. We actually came up with two dogs that got along
greyt with Cede so the parents even got to have a say in choosing their dog
– and they chose Brad!!

Ranger

Ranger, nka Carlton, with his new mom, Rebecca

Next, a woman came to pick out her 5th Greyhound. Her last one had passed away and she was definitely in need of a Greyhound fix and we were happy to help. This was one of those easy, breezy appointments because she knew almost instantly which dog she wanted. Although she did look at one or two others, Ranger, nka Carlton, was the one for her!

Hero

Hero with his new family … Evie, Lily, Ari, Jhaden & Katie

This family came looking for a family dog whose primary caregiver was going to
be one of their 13 year old twins. The family also has a 5 year old so we were
looking for a dog that could be comfortable in a variety of situations. We
were actually surprised with how many of our dogs did well when they were
introduced to the family, but, we weren’t surprised when they decided that
Hero was the one they wanted!

Lunar

Lunar with his new dad, Louis

We seem to be on a roll and, hopefully, it will continue! Our most recent adoption was to a man who came with a list of few dogs he wanted to see and, as usual, we modified the list as we learned more about him and his life style. He narrowed the choices down to 2 dogs who are actually the same age but very different – one was a really bouncy girl and the other a pretty calm boy. As he deliberated, we helped him talk through the pros and cons of each dog and when he made his decision, he chose the last dog that popped into our minds to show ? our very handsome, fawn boy, Lunar!!

Juju

JuJu with her new parent, Nancy & Mike

When we were expecting a lot of dogs a few months ago, we asked a small number of people to take foster dogs. In the last few days, two of the dogs that went to foster ended up being adopted. In the first case, the family was happy to help the dog, but they made it very clear that they would not be adopting. I told them that I understood and we proceeded. A couple of weeks ago, we thought it would be best to get the dog back into the kennel where it could be seen more easily. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I got a note from the family saying that they had decided to adopt JuJu!!

Star

Star with his new family, Cathy and Sam

The next surprise came totally out of the blue. The family has had this particular dog for a couple of months and given that he came from a difficult background, we were in no hurry to move him back to the kennel. Then I got an email out of the blue saying that the lady wanted to give me her credit card to pay for her Mother’s Day present to herself. We couldn’t have been happier for the family but most of all for the sweet boy Star who came to us from Macau China!!

Idaho

Idaho with his new parents, Lisa & Rob

Then a couple came to find their next Greyhound. They had already had a few Greys and recently lost their last one so it was time to make an addition. They came with one particular dog in mind, but when they met him, he was so much like one of their earlier dogs that it was a little hard for them to handle. So, we went on to look at some of our other options. They met them and spent some time, asked a lot of questions and after carefully evaluating each dog, they decided that Idaho was their new dog!!

Thaiba

Thaiba with her new family … Hazel, Trista, Cora & Andy

One more to go … A family with a soon-to-be, 8 year old daughter and an 8 month old baby came to visit. The dogs they have had in the past have been very active and bouncy so they were very interested in one of our two year old lurchers that just happened to have those characteristics. The parents thought she was darling (and she is!!!) but she was a little too much for the kids so we decided to move in a different direction. When we introduced them to one of our sweet little girls from Dubai, it was obvious there was a connection and she wasn’t phased at all by being around either of the kids. We were very excited when they chose Thaiba to go home with them!

Stony

Stony, nka Whiskey, with his new parents Brad & Kolleen

This couple has been thinking about getting a Greyhound for a while and, just like a lot of other people right now, they thought the timing was perfect to make an addition. They were open to seeing both boys and girls and they quickly narrowed their search to one of each. You would think that the girl would be the one that would have the edge as far as manipulating the outcome, but, in this instance the boy pretty much looked at them with his big brown eyes and he knew the couple was putty in his hands. Stony, nka Whiskey, did a Greyt job and his new parents couldn’t wait to take him home!!

Bunny

Bunny with her new mom Emily (& a friend)

When this lady came to find her new furry friend, she was looking for a dog that would get along with her grandmother’s cat. Unfortunately, our supply of cat friendly dogs is just about non-existent at this time so we had to do some creative thinking to come up with some possibilities. The dogs we showed her did so well, but, one little girl won this lady’s heart immediately — Bunny!

Georgette

Georgette, nka Missy, with her new moms Megan & Marsha

These ladies came to the kennel with quite a list of dogs that might fit well in their home. As usually happens, we modified the list when we started talking about the dogs and they got to see quite a variety of dogs from young to a little more mature and from extremely active to fairly calm. They saw some boys & girls, and they really had very little trouble picking their new addition — she actually was the very first one we showed and I think that even before they met the others, they had a strong feeling that dog was going to be theirs. Well, they were correct and Georgette, nka Missy, was already being spoiled on her way out the door!

Aila

Alia

Before this man came to the kennel, he asked me if he had to make a decision at his first appointment or if he could make multiple appointments. I told him he could take his time, we had no intention of hurrying his decision — we just want to make sure he gets the right dog and the dog gets the right home. With that being said, I would have been extremely surprised if he left without a dog. Not only did he leave with a dog, he fell for Miss Aila who has been with us for a while, and we were all thrilled!!

Tammy

Tammy with her new family … Roger, Rafaela & Fae

This couple came to find a female sight hound to be a buddy for their nearly 14 year old Whippet, Fae. They were interested in our Saluki mixes and Greyhounds and that really only left them with three dogs to choose from. All of them did a wonderful job with the people and Fae, but we knew we had a ringer — she had been in a foster home with a 16 year old IG and done beautifully. Sooooo, it was really no surprise that the family just had to adopt Tammy!!

Koki

This couple lost their Greyhound almost a year ago to Osteo and after taking some time to heal, they were ready to roll!! They wanted a big boy and had no problem with a strong prey drive because their last boy apparently had the same characteristic. Needless to say, this opened the door for some of our wonderful dogs that need some more experienced owners. They enjoyed the time they spent with all of them, but the dog that won their hearts was Koki.
