Doc

Doc (nka Gandalf the Greyhound – “Gandalf” for short) with his new parents, Avery & Brooks

One of the fun parts of this job is meeting all the people who are coming to get their dogs. Today, the lady was so excited — she was like a little kid on Christmas morning!! I think her partner was excited too, but it was kinda hard to tell given that he was sitting next to her and trying to be the calmer presence. They were looking for a boy and that gave us a chance to show some boys who have not gotten a lot of exposure before for a variety of reasons. Every one of them did such a greyt job — their enthusiasm was catching and we all had fun watching them strut their stuff. We almost always have to narrow it down to one and I know this couple had a hard time choosing but, they were drawn to Doc almost immediately and he is the one they took home! His new name is Gandalf the Greyhound and they are going to call him “Gandalf” for short.

Butter

Butter, nka Tally, with his new dad, Stephen

The first man who adopted a dog took advantage of being able to go on the Brightwater Walks. He was able to meet some of the dogs and he got to walk the dog he adopted on a couple of the walks. These walks are a greyt way to see the dog in some different situations and get some idea of how the dog is around other breeds of dogs and also get an idea of how well the dog walks on a leash. Obviously, this man saw things he liked in Butter, nka Tally, because that is the dog he adopted.

Libby

Libby with her new parents, Israel & Melissa

The next couple is going to have so much FUN with their new furry friend!! This couple is very active and they wanted a dog that would fit their lifestyle and be able to keep up with them. We showed them a few dogs, but there was absolutely no way that any of them could out do this little girl. When she came out to meet the people, she was hopping and jumping and then within less than a minute, she had shown them how nicely she sits and lies down. And, when she rolled over for her belly rub and smiled through the whole thing, I think we were all ready to take her home!!! This girl had a hard life in South Korea, being crated for 2 years, but in spite of that, she is a happy girl who loves people and people just can’t help loving her back. Her name is Libby, which is short for Liberation (from the crate), and this couple couldn’t have been smiling any wider than they were when they walked out the door with her!! –

Backer

Backer, nka Beauden, with his new dad, Alex

The first man that came to meet dogs just moved here in November and he is ready for a furry companion now that he is settled on dry land (he works for the cruise industry and has been at sea for many years). He definitely had some sweet dogs to pick from and the smartest one certainly made no secret of the fact that he was the one that should be selected. All the dogs were very attentive, but this guy came out to the adoption center giving kisses and leaning and snuggling with the man. He was just irresistible and he couldn’t wait to get out of the door with his new dad. Backer can thank his dad’s New Zealand background and love of rugby for his new name — Beauden who is a famous rugby player.

Baxter

Baxter with his new mom, Diane

The next lady had seen a wonderful dog on our website and she just knew that he was the one for her. Amazingly, he absolutely felt the same way! He was immediately affectionate and gentle — it was like they had known each other before. This guy has really hit paydirt here — he has a beautiful, huge back yard to romp in and he gets to go to work with his new mom every day. For those of you who know Marchet, you’ll probably remember that she called placements like that “greyhound heaven on earth”. I think Baxter would totally agree with her!!

JD

JD with his new parents, Sheila & Trent

The first couple has fostered quite a few dogs for us through the years, but they weren’t in a position to adopt at that time. That all changed when they bought a house and got married so they started seriously looking to adopt one of our hounds. They had tried two different dogs one had separation anxiety and the other was so afraid of the stairs at night that he had to be carried up and down them. The third time was really the charm for them … they found a wonderful guy who is happy & funny and doesn’t have the issues the other dogs had. So, thankfully, JD now has his official new family!!

Reno and Sapphire

Sapphire (left), nka Freya, and Reno, nka Loki, with their new family … Wendy, Aleda & Richard

The next family came to us knowing that they wanted to adopt two dogs. It usually takes a little time for a family to pick the first dog they want to adopt, but, in this case, the first dog that came out glued himself to the man and it was almost impossible to separate them. Obviously, that was going to be one of the adoptees so all that was left to do was to find him a buddy. Unbelievably, that was just as easy as finding the first one. So, in a very short amount of time, Reno (nka Loki) & Sapphire (nka Freya) had a new family.

Dakota

Dakota with her new family … Debbie, Joel & Molly

Last, but not least, a couple brought their older lab, Molly, to find a companion. Molly couldn’t have been any mellower so she made it easy for the Greyhounds to meet her and get to know her. The couple preferred to have a female and both of the available females we showed them got along very well with the couple and Molly. It was a hard choice, but they decided that Dakota would be the best fit for them.

Peri

Peri with her new family …. Dexter, Holly & Teton

When you have chickens, ducks and a 10 pound Chihuahua mix (named Teton), you just know that your search for the perfect Greyhound to add to your family is not going to be easy. Well, thankfully, the couple who has all these wonderful pets also had very realistic expectations which made our jobs so much easier!! We did actually come up with two dogs that did very well with Teton and the couple was fortunate enough to truly have a choice about which dog would work best for them. It only took them a short while to realize that Miss Peri was the one that would be the best fit for their family.

Storm

Storm with his new parents, Helen & Trevor

We got some surprising info when the couple we were working with told us that they came to us because no other agencies that they approached had any dogs available. They wanted a dog (no particular breed or size) and just recently became aware of our hounds and decided to pursue adopting one. We only had a few dogs (3) that they could choose from because they needed a dog that would get along with their cat, and those 3 gorgeous boys really put on a show. By the time the couple left with their new addition, they had not only fallen for Storm, but they were already well on their way to becoming a part of the Greyhound fan club!! Here’s hoping that the lack of dogs at other agencies helps us find a lot more homes for our current (and soon to be) residents!

Amy, Hammer, Lincoln, Aila

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Amy

Amy with her new parents … Jenn and Jeremy

This couple has had quite an experience lately .. they moved out here from Chicago early in the year … one of them had hardly had a chance to get to know her new coworkers and the other hadn’t had much time to get himself set up in his home office before the the quarantine started. They were missing the pets they had with their families and were ready to get a pet of their own. They didn’t particularly care if their new family member was a boy or a girl so they got to meet a nice variety of dogs. They narrowed it down to a boy and a girl and struggled a little with their decision but the sweet black girl, Amy, was just too precious to ignore and she made sure they knew it!!!

Hammer

Hammer with his new parents DJ & Meg

Sometimes I think that these dogs have some kind of ESP or something like that. This couple came to meet dogs and one of the first things that the lady said, before they even met any dogs, was that all the dogs would love her partner. She certainly got that right … they all came out and immediately went to him! They eventually got around to her, but I’m sure she wanted to be first some of the time!! The dog that they took home gave equal attention to both people and made them both feel important! Maybe he had the adoption center bugged, but however he knew what to do, Hammer easily won this lady’s heart and a new home!!

Lincoln

Lincoln with his new mom, Lorri

The next lady had a really hard time making a decision. And, it is no wonder … the two dogs she was deciding between were almost exactly the same age (born within about 7 days of each other), had similar race records, similar personalities and about the only differences were that one was fawn and one was white with red ticking. Sometimes it is hard to make the decision when you are analyzing things too much and when she realized what she was doing and let her emotions into the process, she realized that one of the dogs had been subtly letting her know that he was picking her — Lincoln!

Aila

Aila (nka Seoul) with her new family … Antonio, Logan & Hummus

The next dog to be adopted came from Team Inch in South Korea and has been with us for a while. This dog loves to play (and play hard!!) and we knew that we needed to find a home that had a dog that could keep up with her. Well, we found it!! Two men came in with a year old Doberman mix puppy named Hummus and we hoped they would hit it off!!! Those two dogs had the most wonderful time playing and all of us knew that we had a match. The most wonderful part is that these two dogs absolutely wore each other out!! While we were in the Adoption center getting the paperwork finalized, our dog was completely passed out on the floor in front of the desk!! For those of you who know Aila, nka Seoul, you know what an amazing thing this is and I’m sure her new dads were looking forward to watching the dogs play and enjoying the quiet time while the dogs rested up for their next playtime!!

Joan

Joan (right) with her new family … Sam, Mark, Lancer (left) & Luca

What on earth could a family who has had 13 Greyhounds need? The answer is so obvious — a 14th hound!! This couple is currently living in a mobile home with two Greyhounds while they are waiting for their new home in Colorado to be finished. One would think that 2 dogs in a mobile home would be plenty, but they felt that they were definitely in need of another dog. Since they already had 2 males, the wife felt it would be easier to sell the idea of another dog to her husband if she asked for a female because their previous females had easily bonded to her husband. It was obvious to us that she was telling the truth because every one of the females immediately went to her husband. Given that, it was a hard decision to make but the red fawn, Joan was the one who joined the pack on their way to their new home.

Bizzy

Bizzy with her new family … Jessica, Maddison, Jeff & Red Baron

The first couple likes having a Greyhound and another breed at the same time and they have done this through their life together. They got their first Greyhound together before they married and recently lost it so it was time for another. Since they got their first Greyhound, their lives have changed a lot — they got married and have a young daughter and a Doberman named Red Baron. We were pleasantly surprised how many of our dogs got along with both the little girl and the dog!! Some were a little too active for their daughter, but there was one girl that played nicely with both the child and the dog and she also was smart enough to give the parents their share of attention too! Miss Bizzy seemed to know exactly how to handle things so what else could the family do but take her home?

Ben

Ben, nka Pascal, with his new family … Perlita, Lesley, Sandra & Toby

Next came a family who had a small, white, fluffy dog named Toby. Since Greyhounds are trained using fluffy white things, you can imagine what is was like to try to find some dogs that weren’t interested in chasing or eating Toby. Out of all the dogs we showed them, there were two that we thought we might be able to trust in this situation. One of our shy guys, who has had trouble showing people what an amazing dog he is, finally found a family who was patient enough to let him get comfortable and see glimpses of what a wonderful dog he will be as he comes out of his shell. We are so excited for the family and especially for Ben (nka Pascal like the scientist & Rapunzel’s faithful friend)!!!

Clyde

Clyde with his dad’s friend, Vesna, and his dad, Joe

Lastly, a man, who recently lost his first Greyhound that he adopted when he lived in Southern California, was ready to adopt again. I think somebody gave the dogs a pep talk today because they were pretty wound up when they came out to meet this man, but, luckily, they did what Greyhounds usually do — get pooped and settle down pretty quickly. The man quickly narrowed the field of dogs to two and it seemed that he also narrowed it down to one almost as fast. The dog he chose was so affectionate and loving that it was almost impossible not to choose him — way to go Clyde!!

Red

Red with her new parents … Ben and Jessica

First, a couple, who had recently lost their Greyhound named Ellie, decided that they were tired of talking to a dog that wasn’t there — you know how it is!! So, they needed to get a new furry friend. They started out looking at our sister act, Peri & Sapphire, but those two together were a little more than they were ready for so they moved on to our other girls. It’s unbelievable, but there were only a couple of other girls for them to see and those girls were definitely spunky to say the least! They said that it was really hard to make a decision, but, they chose the beautiful red fawn named Red — I think they better hang on because she is really going to keep them on their toes!!!

Rosa

Rosa with her new parents … Mikala & David

The next couple was looking for a fun companion and they found a real sweetheart. It’s always a work in progress when we show dogs because we learn more about the people with each dog they see and can make adjustments as we go. As we talked over the first couple of dogs they saw, we thought we had a greyt option for them. While this girl had not been shown before, she knew exactly what to do — she went directly to the man and I don’t think it was much more than a minute before she won his heart. Then she started on the lady. The lady wisely wanted to see a few more dogs, but I think we all knew that probably wasn’t going to change the outcome. Our very special girl from South Korea had found her new home and we are all so excited that Miss Rosa is going to get all the spoiling and special attention that she so deserves!!!

Salsa

Salsa with her new dad, Vu

It’s always fun to see how things evolve in an adoption appointment. This man was looking for a dog that was around 65 pounds or less to meet the requirements of his lease. Believe it or not, even though he was looking for boys or girls, we really didn’t have a lot of dogs to show him. However, the dogs we did show were really on their best behavior. We started with boys and he thought they were cool, but everything changed when we started showing him girls. Of course, the ones we showed him were so cute they were hard to resist, but he was completely smitten the minute he met Salsa and that was that!!!

Benny

Benny with his new parents, Lu and Peng

The next couple was venturing into the wonderful world of dog ownership for the first time. They had certainly done their homework and they came to the kennel with quite a list of dogs they wanted to see and also a greyt list of questions they wanted to get answered. We did our best to help them pick the best dog for them and prepare them for their new life with a dog. They enjoyed all the dogs they met, but they fell for one particular dog right away and none of the other dogs we showed them seemed to measure up to him. So, it was really no surprise that they left the kennel with their new family member, Benny!!

David and Bacardi

David (left), nka Oolong, & Bacardi, nka Zoloft, with their new dad, Evan

I keep hearing that Greyhounds can be addicting and this man is certainly an excellent example of someone who is addicted. He has already had 3 or 4 Greyhounds (Sorry the exact number escapes me right now) and this time he came to the kennel intending to adopt 2 Greyhounds. The first dog he picked was such a mellow, sweet fellow that he got along with every dog we introduced him to, so it was up to the new dad-to-be to make the final decision. After looking at a few different pairings, he decided on two wonderful boys — David, nka Oolong, and Bacardi, nka Zoloft!!

Randy and Shay

Randy (left) & Shay with their new parents, Don and Jeryl

The next couple came thinking that they might get one or two dogs. It was kind of like “his” and “hers” dogs. While she has had a Greyhound in the past and knew exactly what she was looking for, he was new to the world of Greyhound ownership and still in the process of deciding exactly what characteristics he was looking for. They picked her dog first and it was amazing how tuned in that dog was to the lady from the very start. She paced herself to match the lady’s pace and often looked to her for guidance for what she wanted next. You just don’t see that every day. The man immediately decided that the first dog we showed them was “his” dog and the dog seemed to know that at the same time the man did. So, they got two wonderful companions — Shay & Randy!!!

Chewie

Chewie (nka Griffin) with his new family … Kamden, Oriah, Ponce & Cassandra

Then a family of four came looking for a young male dog that would get along well with the kids. We found a variety of dogs to show them, and were hoping they would find a dog that they could all agree on. Our wish came true because of one special young boy. He came into the adoption center and gave each one of the people special attention as if each of them were the only one in the room. He executed his plan perfectly and even after seeing a few other dogs, it seemed they were all drawn to him. Maybe Chewie, nka Griffin, can come give some training lessons to the other dogs on how to get adopted!!

Cathie

Cathie, nka Maris, with her new parents, Michael & Stephanie

The last couple was in search of their first Greyhound. A while back, they had met a couple of large boy Greyhounds at a meet and greet so they were thinking that they wanted a girl because the lady is small and they thought she would have an easier time handling a small girl. We showed them both boys and girls so they could see that there are some boys (large & small) who are often easier to handle than some of the little girls. But, in the end, they decided on one of our smallest girls — Cathie who is now known as Maris (named after Niles Crane’s wife on the sitcom, Frasier).

The really fun part of the day was that Cathie and Chewie are sister & brother and they both got adopted on the same day!!!
