Adoption Tails

Mudd, River, Texas, Chewie, Stagger, Gavin, Lot, View

Mudd and River

Mudd (left), nka Max, & River, nka Alex, with their new family … Tom, Kate, Elizabeth, Zachary, Benjamin & Ruth

The family that came to the kennel said that they really didn’t think they would find a dog that would fit them on their first trip to the kennel. They were so wrong!! We had so many dogs that would fit them that we had trouble narrowing the list down so that we could show them a reasonable number of dogs. Usually, with that many people, it’s hard to get everyone on the same page, but this time, they all agreed that instead of just getting one dog, they needed to get two. The two boys they selected got along beautifully with the entire family and each other — so, Mudd, nka Max, and River, nka Alex, have a new home with plenty of people to spoil them rotten — sounds like a pretty good place to me!! –

Texas

Texas with her new family … Ashley, Josh & Birdie (fka Scarlet)

This couple has been an amazing foster family for this particular dog. They agreed to foster her with very little notice and fostering this dog involved weekly trips from West Seattle to Bothell for vet visits, administering meds at least 4 times a day and keeping a one year old dog from being too active. I don’t know how they did it, but they did it beautifully along with taking care of the new dog they had just adopted!! The dog is now healthy enough to be adopted (BTW, she had a broken leg) and she can be an official family member. Texas and her sister Birdie (fka Scarlet) certainly were lucky when they found this couple!!!

Chewie

Chewie with his new parents John & Michele

Busy day today!!! This couple was looking for a mellow dog and, while we had a couple that might have worked, we had one perfect prospect. This dog likes lots of attention, cuddling & just being with his people. He decided pretty quickly that this couple was “his people” and, thankfully, they felt the same way. They couldn’t wait to take Chewie home.

Stagger

Stagger with his new family … Dave, Reed & Kelly

A family was looking to make an addition to their family and they were open to all dogs. But, as we talked and saw their reactions to the different dogs, we realized they really wanted a big boy and we had no shortage of those. They really liked them all, but the first dog they saw clicked with them immediately and that was the one they took home — Stagger!!!

Gavin

Gavin (nka Bambi) with his new parents Zhuoxi & Babak

These dogs are just flying out of the kennel! The first dog to leave made it almost impossible for his prospective parents to choose another dog. He did such a good job of schmoozing that, even though this couple did try to consider other dogs, there was no way the others could compete with Gavin (nka Bambi)!!

Lot

Lot with his new dad, Pearson, and his friend Allison

This man was looking for his first Greyhound and he was leaning toward adopting a male. Since we have so many more males than females, we had plenty of dogs to show him. Truthfully, we could have stopped after the first one!! The look on the man’s face after he met this boy said it all — he had a connection with this boy and even after meeting the other dogs, Lot was the dog he wanted to take home!!

View

View (left) with his new family … David, Grace and Ronin (fka Noah)

When it comes to cat friendly dogs, we have a real shortage of dogs, but the ones we have are all sweethearts. This couple came to find a companion for their “mama’s boy” (the husband’s words, not mine), Ronin, who was formerly known as Noah. Truth be told, we think he was really a tiny bit jealous and wanting a “daddy’s boy”. Whether he got a dog that was going to be “his” buddy remains to be seen, but, there is no doubt that they got the happiest dog in the kennel. This dog’s tail never stops wagging and he is just so cute, if nothing else, View is going to make the whole family smile and laugh frequently!!

Coco, Taylor, Boyd, Bishop

Coco

Coco, nka Edie, with her new parents Harold & Lisa

This couple lost their beloved Greyhound named Cat last month and they needed some time to heal but they were ready to welcome a new family member when they came to the kennel. We had lots of options for them, but when we realized that our more exuberant dogs wouldn’t be a good fit, the list changed quite a bit. That didn’t matter one bit — they had plenty to choose from and they were able to narrow that list down to two very different dogs — a very large sweet male and a sweet little girl. They decided on our cute little black and white girl that looks a little like a Dalmatian — Coco who is now known as Edie!

Taylor

Taylor with his new family … Benjamin, Elena & Moe

This couple has a shepherd mix named Moe that needed a friend to play with. They originally were thinking that one of the Korean dogs would be a good fit for Moe, but, even though our dog was good with Moe, unfortunately they just didn’t make a connection. Then we brought out another one of our sweet boys who is a little on the shy side. These two dogs made a connection at once and started playing with each other and we noticed that our dog came out of his shell very quickly when he was around Moe! So no one was surprised when the couple decided that Taylor would be their new addition.

Boyd

Boyd with his new mom & dad … Ann & Chris

The man of this couple had Greyhounds in his former life back in the Midwest and was able to convince his new partner that a Greyhound would be a good fit for them (it didn’t take much convincing). Since they had experience with this breed, we talked to them about a couple of our dogs that needed help gaining confidence and coming out of their shells. When we introduced them to this particular boy, they took their time to let him get used to them and he responded well. By the time they were ready to take him home, his tail was untucked and he was already showing signs that he was more comfortable with the people and the situations that were going on in the adoption center. Hooray for Boyd — these people realize what a special boy they got.

Bishop

Bishop, nka Bohdi, with her new parents Peng & Lu

This couple has done so much work to learn about Greyhounds … doing turnout weekly, working with a trainer and various other things. While they were doing turnout, they were looking for a special dog and they narrowed it down to two that they had a hard time deciding between. But, after some deliberation, they decided that Bishop, nka Bohdi, was the one for them!!

Dance

Dance with her new dads, Rafael & Ashley

Two men came in search of a moderately active Greyhound companion and it honestly took some thinking to figure out which of our dogs would fit that description. But, we came up with a greyt list of dogs and there were actually more dogs on the list than I thought there would be. They narrowed the list down to one boy and one girl and they thought it took them quite a while to decide because they are both such greyt dogs (we really didn’t think so). When all was said and done, they decided  on the beautiful little girl, Dance, who headed home with them today!

Cindy

Cindy with her new dad, Kaleb

I keep saying that the best way to meet your Greyhound is by doing turnout. You get a chance to interact with a lot of dogs and get to know more about them and you often get first choice of the dogs since you meet them first. That is exactly what this couple did — they decided to do turnout and they met a sweet brood mom that just had to be a part of their family … Cindy!

Ace

Ace with her new parents, Robert & Mariana

This couple has been waiting for a long time to get their Greyhound and, in fact, the lady has been doing turnout for about a year to get to know the breed better. They just moved in to a house 2 weeks ago, completely unpacked & installed their fence so they came prepared to take home a dog. The lady had a favorite but the man hadn’t met any of the dogs so we showed them all the cat friendly dogs so he had a chance to get an idea of what they were like. But, when all was said and done, they went home with the dog that was the lady’s favorite — Ace.

Sky

Sky, nka Dennis, with his new parents Shane & Katya

This couple has been waiting quite a while for us to get some cat friendly dogs so, as soon as we knew which dogs tested as cat friendly, they were ready to come meet them. Since they were at the top of the waiting list, they had the opportunity to see all the possibilities and they actually knew almost immediately which one was going to be theirs because they had such a quick connection with him — Sky!!

Hope

Hope, nka Vingo, with her new parents Heather & Todd

This couple has had Whippets in the past and they came to meet our Greyhounds as well as the Whippet mixes that we have. I have to say that all of the dogs we showed them did an excellent job of showing themselves off, but one of the dogs was just way too good at schmoozing and there was no way the others could compete with her. So, it was really no surprise that the couple decided that Hope was the one for them.

Molly, Shane, Cinder, Rocket, Bada, King

Molly

Molly with her new parents Helen & Ryan

This couple has been wanting adopt a Greyhound for quite a while, but they needed to wait until they were both in the same city and were settled in their new home before they could make that a reality. Thankfully, that is all done so the next thing on their list was to come find their new dog. The lady actually grew up in a family that has had a few Greyhounds of their own and fostered over 20 hounds and the man had also gotten to know Greyhounds through her so they were well aware of what it is like to live with a Greyhound . They met a few boys and girls and after getting to know some of them better in the yard, they decided that cute little Molly was the one for them!

Shane

Shane (nka Bentley) with his new mom, Michelle

We knew that it wouldn’t take much time, but, I don?t think we had a clue that it would happen this fast!! A dog from the new load has already left the building. This woman needed a dog that could get along with a very small dog and since we know nothing about the dogs in this load, we knew we were going to be looking at a lot of dogs! We were right but it was worth it because we found a wonderful red boy who could have cared less that there was a small dog around & there was also a mutual attraction between him & the lady. We couldn’t ask for more so Shane headed home with his new mom!!!

Cinder

Cinder (left), nka Gracie, with her new family … Doug, Dwight & Freddie.

About a year ago, these men adopted one of our Lurchers, Freddie, and they decided that Freddie was in need of a buddy. We actually didn’t have to do much to show them dogs because they had been doing turnout and they had already fallen for a spunky little black girl. So, basically, all we had to do was introduce her to Freddie to see how he got along with her. I think he fell for her immediately and had the best time playing with her so they decided pretty quickly that Cinder, nka Gracie, would be a wonderful addition to their family!!!

Rocket

Rocket with his new parents — Morgan & Cheyenne

It seems like forever since we have had an adoption where someone can actually take a dog home with them that day!! When this couple came to the kennel, they had a few dogs that they wanted to see and one that was of particular interest. Usually, people do not end up going home with the dog they came to see, but this is one of those times when the dog lived up to everything they were expecting and they were pretty sure that he was the one for them as soon as they met him. The other dogs did a greyt job, but Rocket was the superstar today!!!

Bada

Bada with his new parents Daniel & Rachael

The boy that got adopted is so darn cute that his competition really had no chance. He came in to the adoption center and showed his potential parents all the fun (and, honestly, work) they would have if he were in their lives and who could pass that up? When he was out in the yard with them he put on quite a performance and did everything he could to make sure they knew he was going to be their next family member. Although he is only 1 year old, he has covered a lot of ground in that time — born in South Korea and then transplanted to the U.S. — but Bada has found his place here in Seattle with his happy new parents!!

King

King with his new mom, Stephanie

This lady has had Weimaraners & Vizslas in the past and she decided it was time to make a change and a Greyhound would be a good fit for her. She doesn’t have kids or other pets & she has a house so she could have almost any dog that we had. We still have some really cool dogs left from our last load and, thankfully, one of those was just the right dog for her — King!!

Benny

Benny with his new parents, Trina & John

This couple had a Greyhound that they got from GPI almost 20 years ago and they were really ready to get another one. BTW, they did have a Cheweenie after the Greyhound (we’ll forgive them for that “wink, wink”) but they knew their hearts were ready for another one of our dogs. They actually came in with a very short list of dogs (2) and, while they did see both dogs, the first dog on the list was the one they fell for. So, lucky Benny was off to his new home with greyt parents and with a big fenced yard for him to romp around in!!!

Darth and Daisy

Daisy (far left) & Darth (2nd from left) with their new family … Garret, Dionne, Dave (2nd from right) Shelly (fka Spectra – far right

This is one of those special adoptions we have all been hoping would happen. Two dogs were returned when their original owner passed away and, as you might guess, they were a little confused and adrift. We really wanted to place the dogs in the same home so we knew it might take a little time. Luckily, the couple that used to take care of them when the previous owner travelled said they would take care of them and they have been fostering them for the last few months. Recently, another couple came to us to find a companion for their Greyhound, Shelly (fka Spectra), who already had a buddy, Dave, who wasn’t interested in playing with her. The couple thought another buddy for Shelly would make things easier for Dave. They looked at a few dogs and then told us they would love to meet the pair of dogs we had available. All the dogs and people met and got along beautifully and we were truly thrilled (there may have been a few tears of joy too!!) when they told us that they were adopting Darth & Daisy!!!

Poppy

Poppy (left) with her new family … Jack, Jan & Holly (fka Birdie)

This husband certainly knows how to make points with his wife. About 10 months ago, (With a little guidance) he came up with the perfect Christmas present for her — a Greyhound named Holly (fka Birdie)! Now, he’s at it again! Her birthday was last week so they came to get a present for his wife and a playmate for Holly! It didn’t take long for them all to decide that Poppy would be the best fit for everything they needed!!

Holly

Holly with her new parents, Ken and Kirsten

This adoption has been in process since July and has been a true labor of love. This couple came to the kennel and we showed them every dog we had that fit their needs but, they were all much more active than the couple really wanted to take on. We had one dog left that we hadn’t shown because she had heart worm and was going to be starting treatments soon so we decided to see if she would be a fit for them. The minute the dog walked into the adoption center, there was no question that those three were meant to be a family. We worked some things out so that they could foster her through the heart worm treatments and make sure she got to all her treatments as well as administer all the meds involved in the treatment. Just an FYI, the heart worm treatments are serious stuff and it is imperative that the dog be as calm and sedentary as possible during the entire 3 month process — not an easy thing to do!!! Thankfully, her treatments went well and were over early this week so she was finally able to be adopted — Hooray for Holly and her new parents!!!
