“Those were the stories that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why, but I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding onto something.” ~What are we holding onto, Sam? “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for.”
Samwise Gamgee, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Dearly missed by Karen, Randy, Adam and David Hochberger
Samwise was the ultimate epitome of his name. In that we mean; he would be his loyal and loving self no matter the situation. And even though he had infections, abscesses, and even a toe amputation, he still had a wag in his tail when he would greet you at the door, and be ready to snuggle on the couch. And though he may be gone to our eyes, he still resides in our hearts and deepest parts of our souls.
The following is a simple tune sung by our Samwise’s namesake, Samwise Gamgee in the “Return of the King:”
In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe ’tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.
Though here at journey’s end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.
