Elaine, Charm, Honey, Poppi, Megan, Happy

June 15, 2020

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Elaine

Elaine with her new mom, Mackenzie

This lady started her journey to adopt a Greyhound just as COVID 19 raised its ugly head and everything came to a grinding halt. So, she has waited 3 long months to get the go ahead to adopt and, as you might guess, she was just a little excited to come meet the dogs and see which one would be the best fit for her. She met some really sweet dogs and, I have to say that these dogs, did a marvelous job of schmoozing & showing off. At the end of the appointment, she went home with a beautiful black & white girl named Elaine whose tail never stopped wagging — nobody could resist this!!!!

Charm

Charm with her new family … Saorise & Ren

This lady and her daughter wanted a Greyhound so much that they made an eleven hour trip from Canada which included two ferry rides to get to the kennel to meet their new family member. We had a few hurdles we had to get over to make this happen. They weren’t able to bring their small dog with them, but thanks to one of our recent adopters who answered our call for help and brought her small dog, Cayenne, to the kennel within minutes of our request, we were able to identify some possibilities!! All we really needed was one, and it was pretty easy for all of us to agree that the one for them was a darling little red fawn named Charm!!

Honey

Honey (right) with her new family … Jacqueline, Jim, Eden & Alex (left)

This family has had their first Greyhound, Alex, for about six years and they had decided that it was time for her to have a buddy. The mom came to watch some testing we were doing on the dogs and she identified one or two that she thought would be a good fit for her family. At the adoption appointment, we added a few suggestions of our own so they saw a nice variety of dogs. But, when all was said and done, they took home the girl the mom fell for at the testing — our beautiful brindle girl with a really cute white tip on her tail — Honey!!

Poppi

Poppi with her new parents, Kelli & Randy

This couple came to find a nice calm dog to fit their lifestyle. They had a good list of dogs they wanted to see and, of course, we added a few suggestions. Most of the dogs on the list were boys and those boys really were pretty chilled and we were a little surprised at how calmly they came out to meet these people. There were also a couple of girls they wanted to see and these girls were supposed to be a little more active, but, they came out like little angels!! At the end of the appointment they decided on one of the little girls who was so sweet, butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth — we hope they believed us when we told them this little one can be a bit over exuberant — but, regardless, this girl knew what she wanted and did an excellent job of letting them know. She immediately started giving kisses when she met these people and that is really hard to resist so Poppi has a new family!!!

Megan

Megan, nka Mabel, with her new dad, Joon

This man has wanted a Greyhound since he was a junior in high school about 10 years ago and today he finally got his wish. He has been doing turnout at least a couple of days a week since January so that he could get to know the dogs and learn more about them and, hopefully, get to meet the dogs well before they are ready to go. He had selected a couple of dogs he was interested in and, just to make things interesting, we added a few to his list. It really didn’t take long for him to decide that our pretty little brindle girl, Megan (who is now known as Mabel), would be the best one for him.

Happy

Happy, nka Nessie, with her new parents, Lesley and Chris

Next an excited couple came to choose their first dog together. I have to say that our dogs were in particularly fine form today as they kissed, snuggled and shimmied their way into these people’s hearts! I’m not sure I could have made a choice after watching them perform, but this couple persevered and I would say that the couple and the dog mutually chose each other. Miss Happy, nka Nessie, made it pretty clear that this couple was her new family and, thankfully, they listened to her and felt the same way!!

Joseph

Joseph with his new parents, Laura & Ted

Next, a couple who has had Borzoi for years and recently lost their most recent one came to meet some Greyhounds. Since Borzoi are difficult to find, they did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that a Greyhound would be a good alternative. They wanted a young male and although they saw a few dogs, they seemed to have a connection with the first dog they met and that was the one they took home with them — Joseph!!

Crackle

Crackle with his new family … Max, Ryan & Ranita

Whenever we have families with young children, it is a little nerve racking just because we want to do our best to make sure our dog and the family are all going to be as safe as possible. This family has a two year old son that is an independent little guy who noticed the dogs but seemed much more interested in everything else that was going on. He did greyt with all the dogs he met which meant that the parents got to make the final decision. And, they had absolutely no trouble making that decision since they both fell in love with Crackle the minute they met him!

Abby

Abby with her new family … Rose and Cayenne

The next lady has kittens and a cute little pittie mix named Cayenne. She had the foresight to start muzzling Cayenne a few weeks ago so that she would be used to it by the time she came to the kennel which made it a much easier visit for all of us. We did not have a large number of dogs to show her, and the truth is that we really didn’t even need to show her any more dogs after the first one. Both Cayenne and her mother decided pretty quickly that Abby was the girl for them!

Buster, Nala, Jesse

Buster

Buster with his new parents, Jason & Chelsea

The first of our new dogs has already left the building — that sure didn’t take much time. A couple came in to find their first dog as a married couple. There were only a few dogs that were available to be shown and they ranged from a busy puppy, a little less busy puppy, a couple of confident females and a darling, calm, almost 4 year old boy. Obviously, there was no contest — they chose our new boy, Buster!

Nala

Nala with her new dad, Navid

This next man took on quite a challenge when he fostered two of our dogs from South Korea. They were a brother and a sister who definitely needed some serious help with their manners and this man was up to the task. While he was going through his training, he realized that he honestly only had enough energy for one dog so he had to make the tough choice of which one would be his. He and the girl bonded quickly and had become jogging buddies as well as general best buddies. So, he had to keep Nala!! BTW, his efforts were a big part of the reason that Nala’s brother, Simba, found his new home!!

Jesse

Jesse, nka Ziggy, with her new dad, Evan

We have learned that when someone knows what they want, they KNOW what they want. This man came looking for his fourth Greyhound and we thought it might take a little while. But, we were wrong! We brought out a pretty red girl who knew what she wanted and made it clear. She climbed up on the couch, started licking the man’s ear and neck and by the time we got her off the couch, he said, “I like this one”. We suggested he at least spend some time outside with her and after a few minutes he came in and told us she was the one! I think we should ask Jesse, nka Ziggy, to come back and give “how to get adopted” lessons to the other dogs!

Gambit

Gambit (left) with his new family … Dodge, Redd, Paula & Josie

The next family had a very sad reason for needing to get a Greyhound — one of their recent dogs dropped dead on a walk. That left the whole family in a mess, but the one that took the loss the hardest was their 12 year old Greyhound, Josie. Josie and the other dog had been inseparable for about 8 years so it was no wonder why she was sad and in need of a new sister/brother. We only showed a couple of dogs, but that was enough and even at that, it still took a while to figure out which one would be best for them. In the end, they listened to Josie and she picked Gambit!

Simba

Simba with his new parents, Mickey & Kristine

Then came a couple that has had Greyhounds in the past and lost their most recent one last October. They have had young, active hounds in the past and they were ready to take on another one that needed training. We just happened to have one or two of those and we couldn’t wait to show them off. Every one of them showed their true colors and the couple decided that Simba, our blue eye/brown eye boy from South Korea and Team Inch, was the one for them!! –

Lulu

Lulu with her new parents, Cody & Amie

The next couple wanted a dog that could keep up with their active lifestyle and we had the perfect one for them! This girl is very bouncy, but at the same time, she is sweet, cuddly and just darling. They realized immediately what a wonderful girl she is and decided that Lulu was the one for them — I hope the wife doesn’t get jealous because Lulu had already bonded with the husband before they even walked out of the adoption center! –

Queenie

Queenie, nka Gypsy, with her new mom, Anusha

This lady was in the right place at the right time. A couple of days ago I told her that we didn’t have a dog that would be a good fit for her, and then, we had a dog come back to us that seemed like she would fit right in. All it took was a short introduction and both mother & dog seemed ready to start their time together — it seems that both Queenie, nka Gypsy, and the lady were at the right place at the right time!!

Kaine

Kaine, nka Paul, (left) with his new mom, Darcy, her friend and his littermate, Kayko, nka Penny

First, a couple of months ago, we asked a couple to foster one of our really shy boys because they had his sister and we were hoping that being with her in addition to being in a home might help him come out of his shell. In that time, he has blossomed because of their patience and love. Of course, we were hoping they would adopt him and this was the day. Kaine, nka Paul, is now officially a part of the family that includes his sister Kayko, nka Penny — HooooRay!!!

Lolla, Buddy, Breaker, Oreo, Birdy, Drake

May 22, 2020

Thanks to our hard-working,  caring volunteers, and patient approved adopters, many dogs have been adopted recently.  Catch up today with Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling’s stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Lolla

Lolla with her new family … Ian, Nicole, Bogey (left) & Lucy (middle)

I wish I could tell you how many times we have shown this particular dog lately — suffice it to say that it was a lot. She is pretty skittish at first so we were definitely looking for a family with the patience to let her blossom at her own pace. Since being shown in the little yard makes her nervous because of the road noise, we decided to show her in the big yard where it would be quieter and she would be more comfortable. Greyt plan but didn’t work out so well since our neighbor was out in the yard using a nail gun through the whole showing. The good news is that these people saw exactly what this dog was like and fell completely in love with her almost immediately. So, Miss Lolla headed off to her new home in Puyallup with her new buddies, a French Bull dog named Bogey and a Pug named Lucy — oh yeah, and two wonderful parents!!

Buddy

Buddy, nka Kona, with his new parents, Dave & Janet

This couple has already been through the adoption process a few times and recently lost their last Greyhound, Tux. They were missing him terribly and felt strongly that Tux would have wanted them to share the love they have with another Greyhound. In the past, this process has gone very quickly with this couple because they know what they are looking for and they recognize it as soon as they see it and today was no exception. They only looked at two dogs and that was plenty for them and, yet, they said it was still a very difficult decision for them. But, in the end, they decided that the goofy, light brindle boy with the helicopter tail was the one for them. I think that Buddy, nka Kona, is going to keep them entertained for a long time!!!

Breaker

Breaker and his mom, Jill

This is one adoption that happened and I’m not sure quite how it all got started, but, it kind of goes like this … the woman was sorority sister of one of our board members and they originally met a few years ago and bonded because they both had Greyhounds. Unfortunately, the lady recently lost her Greyhound and she was looking for another one — through the sorority newsletter written by our board member, she learned that our board member was fostering the dog that she had been looking at on our web-site. (I hope you are still with me on this!!) After the lady went through our approval process, we met and introduced her to the foster dog. Here’s the really fun part … this dog is pretty shy and yet, he walked right up to this lady and her cute little Weiner dog named Scoobie with his head held high and tail wagging. It was as if Breaker knew this was his new family and couldn’t wait to start the next phase of his life!

Oreo

Oreo, nka Lucy, with her new dad, Ron

We had our first virtual adoption … this couple was anxious to get their new dog but the lady had to work so the man came with his cell phone and FaceTime and his partner was able to participate in the whole process including the final decision on which dog they were going to adopt. There really was no contest … the first two dogs they saw were sweet and shy but, unfortunately, weren’t very interested in being around people. But then, we brought out one of our little girls from Dubai — she walked right up to the man, layed down & rolled over to have a belly rub and shortly thereafter Oreo, nka Lucy, walked out of the door with her new dad!!

Birdy

Birdy with her new family … Adele, Sara, Andrew, Gus and Omelet

This family has a 6 year old Portuguese Water Dog named, Omelet, who was in need of a playmate. The family thought that a girl would be the best fit so, since Omelet is extremely active, we introduced him to a couple of our more active, assertive girls. Truthfully, we had no idea what was going to happen when we turned the dogs loose and we were all prepared and hoping someone above was watching over us!! Thankfully, all went well and we had two greyt possibilities for Omelet to choose from and he chose our sweet, brown eyed, fawn girl Birdy (who BTW is no pushover and knows how to stand up for herself)!!!

Drake

Drake with his new family … Myra, Max and Breezy

This couple brought their 2 1/2 year old Golden doodle named Breezy to the kennel to find a playmate. Breezy lacks confidence so they were hoping to find a male dog that might help her with that in addition to having the energy to keep up with her. We found a couple of dogs that we thought would be able to do just that and, fortunately, Breezy liked both them so the parents actually got to make the final decision. The chose our big fawn boy, Drake!!
