Spring, Lang, Diesel, Hans, White, Leny, Truck, Scooby

September 30, 2019

Join us here each Monday as Regional Vice President Kathy Kreyling shares stories from the Adoption Center. Check out our Available Dogs to see who’s still waiting for their forever home.

Spring

Spring with her new dad … Mac

This is a first for me … a man came in wanting a dog that would fit in his car! Luckily, he has adopted from us before and we knew he had a good sense of humor or we might have sent him packing! (I’m kidding!) We only showed him a few dogs and it was pretty obvious which one caught his eye. A sweet little fawn girl came out to the adoption center and immediately started giving the man kisses (this is something I haven’t seen her do before) — and we were thinking this looked like a pretty good fit. Both the adopter and the adoptee agreed and now Miss Spring, who just happens to have a real “spring” in her step, has a new dad.

Lang

Lang with his new parents … Will & Rose

Next, a couple who has been doing turnout for the last three months came to get the dog they fell in love with three months ago! They were delayed because they were moving and had to get their fence up to snuff before they could adopt. Luckily, he waited for them! I asked what attracted them to him and the man lovingly said — he is such a total “goober”!! You know what, that is almost a perfect description of Lang (BTW — this guy has the funnest smile you have ever seen AND he puts his toys away when he is done playing with them!!!!).

Diesel

Diesel with his new family … Sean, Renee & Moose

We met the most wonderful Airedale Terrier named Moose and he was looking for someone to play with and someone to keep his parents company. Since Moose was around 3, he thought it would be fun to have a younger sibling and we were happy to oblige. Out of all the dogs he met, he picked two dogs that he had the most fun with and then the rest was up to the parents. They loved both of the dogs and had a heck of a time choosing one — they asked me every question you can think of to give one dog an edge over the other, but the answers were the same for both dogs. We finally decided to take Moose out of the equation & put the parents in a yard with the possible adoptees. After spending time with each one, they decided that Diesel was the best choice for all of them!!

Hans

Hans with his new family … Melissa, Bishop & Zach

Our dogs are finding homes all over the place – north, south and west. This dog headed to Canada with a family that lost their last Greyhound just 2 days before Christmas last year. They wanted a youngish dog who was moderately active – those two characteristics don’t always go together, but we gave it our best shot. It?s not always easy to get parents and a sixteen year old on the same page, and it was fun to watch the interaction as the son repeatedly liked the more active dogs and the parents wanted the less active ones. However, they persevered! They were only part way through the list that they wanted to spend time with outside when they met us at the back door and announced that they had made a unanimous decision – Hans was going to Canada!

White

White, nka Cali, with her new parents … Mary Catherine & Bill

The next dog went to Portland with a couple who also lost their Greyhound recently. At first, they decided to make a trip up here so that they could help with spa day and celebrate the lady?s birthday. But their agenda expanded when they heard that a very special girl was available for adoption. It only took a few minutes for them to realize that this little girl was the one for them and they couldn’t wait to head south with White, nka Cali (from Caledonia which is an Irish song that means “going home”).

Leny

Leny, nka Leonard, with his new family … Tori, Justin & Myrtle

One more couple who also recently lost their Grey needed a new Greyhound for their 5 year old Terrier Mix, Myrtle, to play with. Myrtle was a wonderful sport and put up with all of these big, leggy dogs sniffing and trying to get to know her. After meeting a variety of boys and girls, she decided that her favorite one, who also, thankfully, happened to be the favorite of her parents, was Leny who is now known as Leonard. BTW, Leonard headed west to Ballard!

Truck

Truck (left) with his new family … Kristi, John & Herbie

Most of the people who have come in to look at dogs lately have recently lost one of their precious hounds and this couple is no exception. Not only were they missing their wonderful boy, Diver, but their remaining Greyhound, Herbie, was also very sad without his buddy. The dogs we showed them did a greyt job, but one of them walked into the adoption center and did some of the things that Diver had done, like bowing, which immediately tugged at their hearts. When I saw the lady tear up as she talked about this dog, there was no doubt that Truck was going to head home with them.

Scooby

Truck (left) with his new family … Kristi, John & Herbie

The next family came looking for their first Greyhound mostly because their 21 year old son was really wanting a big dog. This family, actually the mom, started out as a cat family, then they expanded to include small dogs including their current Italian Greyhound. So, the next step was to a full sized Greyhound. They have previously adopted dogs with all kinds of special needs and they were well equipped to take on one of our shyer dogs. We introduced them to a few of our shy dogs and one of them really caught their eye — Scooby (I can’t wait to see how he blossoms with them)!!!

Flame, Bonnie

Flame

Flame with her new dads, Neil & David

Lately, we have had quite a few adopters that have had a lot of Greyhounds through the years and that trend continued with the men that recently came to the kennel. They have had 5 Greyhounds through the years and after the loss of their most recent Grey last November, they were missing that Greyhound energy in their home. They saw all the dogs we had that would get along with their two Ragdoll cats and each one, of course, had its own special “something”, but, it was impossible to resist the little black girl that came out bouncing across the room with her tale wagging. She had a way of making everyone feel happy and special and these men quickly realized that Flame had to be part of their family!

Bonnie

Bonnie with her new parents … Jasub & Karlie

Chalk up one more Canadian Greyhound!!! Okay, it is time for us US folks to get rolling and adopt some Greyhounds!! At any rate, I can think of a lot of things that newlyweds have to take care of after their wedding, but for this couple, who were just married on Saturday, the one of the most important things was to adopt their new furry baby. They have been planning to get a Greyhound for many years and now that the wedding is over, the time for an adoption has come. We showed them 2 boys and 2 girls and, while all of them were on their best behavior, there was one dog that really had her “A” game going and, truthfully, we would have been surprised if the couple had picked any dog but Bonnie!

Cosmo

Cosmo (right) with his new moms & sister … Dayle, Martha and Ivy, fka Wattzee

As many of you know, when you have decided you are a Greyhound person, you are a Greyhound person!! The ladies we just met are Greyhound people (they have been in the Greyhound family since 1995) —- I honestly lost count while they were naming their previous Greys, but I am pretty sure that the one they adopted was either number 7 or 8. Of course, the most important part of the whole adoption process is that the current dog, in this case, Miss Ivy who was formerly known as Wattzee, sign off on whatever dog was adopted. Luckily, Ivy is very mellow and she got along with everyone so it was up to the ladies to make the final choice. We were all pretty sure that they were going to pick one of our pretty little girls, but we were so wrong — happily, they picked our special boy, Cosmo!!!

Leny

Leny with his new dad, Simon

This Friday must have been men’s day and nobody told us – all the adopters and
adoptees were men! First up was a man from Bellingham who couldn’t wait to
get his first Greyhound. Although we didn’t have a lot of dogs that fit his
situation, the ones we had were all stars but he seemed to have little problem
narrowing the list down to 2. At that point, he had a real dilemma since he
couldn’t pick just one so he asked if he could think it over and get back to
us. It took him 2 days to make his decision and then he had to wait 4 more
days until he could come pick up his dog. So, after a sleepless night last
night, he finally got to take home his new Greyhound, Leny!!

Zakaria

Zakaria with his new dad, Cody

The second man moved here from the east coast a while back and since he once
had a Greyhound back there, he was ready for another one. He had come to the
last open house so he had a preview of the dogs that were available. He came
with his list in hand, but most of the dogs on his list had already found
their forever homes. You would think he might have been disappointed, but the
number one dog on his list was still available and, after meeting a wide
variety of dogs and spending quite a bit of time with that dog, he was still
number one!! So he now has a very handsome dog from Dubai named Zakaria!!

White

White with her new dad, Carrick

It is really fun to watch someone who knows what they want go ahead and make
it happen. Our most recent adopter was a young man who just returned from a
year in Japan and is on his way to Bellingham to finish his college education.
He has experience with small sight hounds and has always wanted a big dog and
had his sights (no pun intended) set on a Greyhound. When he came to the
kennel, he freely shared his plans for the next couple of years and he made
sure we knew the most important part of his plan was to get his first
Greyhound. Before he even came to the kennel, he had done his research and he
knew exactly which one he wanted! Luckily, he and the dog got along
beautifully when they met and he was able to fulfill his plans to adopt his
first Greyhound and he headed off to Bellingham with his new pal, White!!
