The goals of Greyhound Pets, Inc. are to find
good homes for greyhounds, and to look out for their welfare. This is the
reason for our existence, and we must always put these goals first. Other
activities such as social events, fund raising, and so forth, are important
to any volunteer organization, but must never come before our concern for
the greyhounds. The dogs cannot speak for themselves; we must represent
them. Any activities that do not help the greyhounds cannot be part of our
efforts.
As a non-profit organization, we cannot engage in
political lobbying. The surplus of dogs is a result of over breeding, the
same as in the non-greyhound pet world, and the best way we can help is to
do the best we can to find loving homes for retired dogs. Deliberate
instances of greyhound abuse are thankfully rare and the dogs must be kept
happy and healthy in order to earn money for their owners as they run
voluntarily. Since we receive both our dogs and support from the track, it
is necessary to keep on good terms with the track in order to obtain dogs to
place in homes. Therefore, we will not make any negative public comments
concerning dog racing. We appreciate the efforts of any group or individual
finding good homes for greyhounds. We believe that we are doing the best job
possible, but any negative feelings about other groups or individuals will
be kept to ourselves.
We volunteers are united by our love for the greyhound
and our fervent desire to save these gentle, loving creatures when they are
no longer desired as racers.
